Torrez Finney tops four Middle Georgia wrestling state champs
Torrez Finney of Jones County defended his GHSA Class AAAAA wrestling title with another close win while Howard's JaQwun Stinson captured a state title, as well.
They were joined by West Laurens' Ben Deal and Treutlen's Cody Calhoun as champions from Middle Georgia in Saturday's action at the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth.
Finney, also a standout for Jones County's football team, topped Tripp Breeden of Cass 6-4 on Saturday for the title. A year ago, he beat Aaron Calegor of Camden 10-8 in sudden victory. Finney was 40-4 last year and improved to 40-0 with Saturday's win. He had two pins in four state matches.
Stinson remained unbeaten in 22 matches with three pins in the tournament, winning 7-5 in the final over Jack Ness of Buford.
Middle Georgia was assured of a champion in Class AAAA 152, with Deal beating TK Clay of Crisp County 7-1.
Calhoun, who finished third last year, got past Dontavious Mosley of Commerce 10-7 in Class A 195.
Four other area wrestlers finished second, three in close matches.
Tattnall Square's Christian Rodgers was nipped 3-2 by Michael Patton of Commerce in Class A 220. Upson-Lee sophomore Lazavier Moore lost 5-3 to Chris Henderson of Ridgeland in Class AAAA 220. Ian Blankenship of Telfair County fell 8-6 in sudden victory to Knox Allen of Commerce in Class A 170. Payton Brooks of Treutlen was stopped 9-1 by Jacob Brewer of Commercer in Class A 120.
