Peach County's Nausia Woolfolk having strong high school finish

FORT VALLEY -- Peach County point guard Nausia Woolfolk is headed to Florida State next year after signing with the Seminoles in the fall.

She said she picked the Seminoles for a simple reason.

"I felt like I was at home," she said.

If she feels at home with the Seminoles, that could be a good sign that she can continue her strong career.

Woolfolk, who is ranked 15th nationally as a point guard by ESPN, has scored 288 points so far this season. This puts her at 2,265 points scored since she started at Peach County her freshman year.

Head coach Maxine Cherry, who has known Woolfolk most of her life, said that she received offers from across the country.

"It was coming from California, Florida, just all over," Cherry said.

Woolfolk explained that it was a tough decision with all of the Division I offers on the table. Cherry said they were looking for a program that was a good fit for Woolfolk, somewhere she would be able to play from the start and that was not too far from home so her parents could watch her play.

"I think (Florida State) can get her to the next level," Cherry said. "One of her dreams is to get in and play in the WNBA."

Woolfolk is highly involved in school. Between basketball, softball, football and soccer she still finds time to tutor underclassmen and help teachers.

"She's a phenomenal athlete," Cherry said.

Woolfolk has been playing basketball since she was 4 or 5. Last season, she was named the GHSA Class AAA Player of the Year, as well as The Telegraph's All-Middle Georgia Player of the Year. She recently was named team's MVP in softball, too.

When she was around 10 years old, her brother suggested that she try out for recreation football.

"I started quarterback, and I started wide receiver and running back," Woolfolk said. Cherry said that Woolfolk was one of the first females to play on the team.

"It was a good experience as a kid, and I had a lot of fun," said Woolfolk, who said she still plays football when she can.

Although Woolfolk can be quiet, Cherry described her as a leader.

"I'm proud of her and what she's doing," Cherry said.
