This week's Middle Georgia basketball games to watch
Stratford at Tattnall Square, 6 p.m., Tuesday: First place in GHSA Region 7A-A will be on the line in the girls game. The first meeting Jan. 8 resulted in a 34-21 win for Stratford and Tattnall's only loss of the season. Tattnall (17-1, 5-1 Region 7A-A) is third in the Class A private school power ratings, while Stratford (17-2, 5-1) is ninth. In the boys game, Tattnall opened region play with a win over first-place Wilkinson County, but the Trojans have lost four of five since.
Peach County at Central, 6 p.m., Tuesday: The girls teams are tied for second place in the loss column in Region 2-AAA. Peach County, which is 10th in the Score Atlanta Class AAA rankings, won the first meeting 71-45.
Veterans at Baldwin girls, 6 p.m., Tuesday: Baldwin has one region loss, and it took place Dec. 11 in a 62-40 thrashing by Veterans. The Braves' losses since then have been to Carrollton -- currently No. 4 in Class AAAA -- and rival Washington County.
Vidalia at Jeff Davis girls, 6 p.m., Tuesday: Here's a nifty south Georgia showdown between a pair of ranked teams in Region 2-AA. Vidalia (16-3, 9-1) won a pair of games in last year's playoffs, and Jeff Davis (18-1, 8-1) seeks revenge for a 70-52 loss to Vidalia earlier this month.
Josey at Washington County girls, 7 p.m., Tuesday: This game features a pair of playoff teams from last year battling in a big Region 3-AAA game, with the Golden Hawks a half-game behind the Eagles for second place, both behind leader Laney. Washington County's Nia Johnson had 34 points Friday.
Monticello at Crawford County boys, 7:30 p.m., Tuesday: Crawford County, to nobody's surprise, is undefeated at home this season and topped Monticello (in second place in Region 4-AA) on the road 73-55 earlier this month. That was the Hurricanes' last loss.
Bleckley County at Lamar County girls, 6 p.m., Friday: Three teams in Region 4-AA have winning region marks, and two of them battle in Eatonton. Bleckley County is 8-1 in the region while Lamar County is 4-2. Daishai Almond had 27 points and six rebounds in Lamar County's 60-22 win Friday over Northeast, which played Bleckley County to a six-point game almost two weeks ago.
FPD at Tattnall Square, 6:30 p.m., Friday: FPD could still prove to be a spoiler in the Region 7A-A girls race, although a Jan. 15 loss to Wilkinson County cost the Vikings a realistic shot at a top seed for the region tournament. The Vikings upset Stratford in their first meeting, and Tattnall escaped with a 31-29 win the first time the Trojans played FPD. The boys game should be competitive, as well, with FPD winning the first meeting 51-47.
Perry at Howard boys, 7:30 p.m., Friday: Perry was handed its first Region 2-AAAA loss Friday, 72-62 at Upson-Lee, giving both teams one region loss. Howard is tied for third with Mary Persons and lost 51-48 at Perry in early January.
Monticello at Macon County boys, 7:30 p.m., Friday: The two teams closest to Crawford County in Region 4-AA face each other as region tournament seeding issues become more important.
Jones County at Northside boys, 8:30 p.m., Friday: Northside will either have momentum or be down after losing a buzzer-beater Saturday to Warner Robins, but the Eagles should have some confidence from their 81-80 loss in Gray on Jan. 5.
