High school notebook: Treutlen boys top area teams in basketball polls

Treutlen's boys team is the highest ranked team from Middle Georgia in the latest Score Atlanta rankings, and there's company from Middle Georgia for the Vikings.

Treutlen is No. 1 in the Class A public poll, followed by Hancock Central and Wilkinson County, with Taylor County at No. 6 and Hawkinsville at No. 8. Taylor County is second in Class A public girls.

Warner Robins, Vidalia, Stratford and Taylor County are the area teams ranked in both the boys and girls polls.

The Demons (Class AAAAA) are seventh on the girls side and eighth on the boys side. Vidalia is third (boys) and seventh (girls) in Class AA. Taylor County's boys are No. 7 in Class A public. Stratford's girls are fourth and boys ninth in Class A private.

Central's boys are No. 6 in Class AAA and Upson-Lee No. 7 in Class AAAA. Crawford County is No. 4 and Dublin No. 9 in Class AA boys.

Veterans' girls are No. 7 in Class AAAA, and Peach County is No. 10 in Class AAA.

Class AA has three area girls teams in addition to Vidalia: No. 5 Bleckley County, No. 6 Jeff Davis and No. 9 Putnam County.

Tattnall Square is No. 5 in Class A private girls. Taylor County is joined in Class A public by No. 7 Wheeler County and No. 10 Wilcox County.

The blast of precipitation led to a variety of schedule interruptions for the weekend.

Among Friday's basketball postponements were Central at Jackson and Briarwood at John Milledge.

Among Saturday's basketball postponements is Maynard Jackson at Rutland (will not be rescheduled).

Coaches and schools should contact The Telegraph as soon as makeup dates are set.

SIGNINGS UPDATE

GMC's Taylor Long signed with East Georgia, a four-year program in Swainsboro, as has Treutlen's Niya Moye, both for softball.

Houston County softball pitcher Sarah Smith is headed to South Georgia. MacKenzie Barnes of Jones County's Elite Eight softball team signed with Gordon.

Mary Persons multi-sport athlete Harlee Stewart signed to play softball at GMC.

Houston County baseball outfielder Blake Dawson signed with Wallace State-Hinesville (Alabama) Community College.

A pair of Veterans baseball players will sign Thursday with West Georgia: infielder Logan Arnett and outfielder Dalton Gilliam. West Georgia, a Gulf South Conference member, went 33-15 last season.

DUGOUT CLUB HONOREES

The softball chapter of the Georgia Dugout Club handed out its top coach and player honors recently, with Middle Georgia taking home a solid share.

Statewide players of the year from the area were Houston County's Smith in Class AAAAA, Vidalia's Rebecca Lawrence in Class AA, Stratford's Mary Wilson Avant in Class A private and GMC's Kaylie Harding in Class A public.

Coaches of the year from Middle Georgia were Houston County's Angela Crawford in Class AAAAA, Brad Thompson of Vidalia in Class AA, Jeff Treadway of Stratford in Class A private and Julie Brooker of GMC in Class A public.

HONOR ROLL

Westfield multi-sport standout Giles Amos passed the 1,000-point scoring mark in basketball this week, and he was honored for the feat Friday night during the Hornets' game with Augusta Prep.
