Three more Middle Georgia schools are looking for football coaches
Three more football jobs in Middle Georgia have come open recently, at Hancock Central, Montgomery County and Jeff Davis.
Zackery Harris turned in his resignation at Hancock Central in late December.
Harris went 24-57 in eight seasons.
"We played one of the toughest schedules (in Class A)," Harris said, noting region opponents Aquinas and Lincoln County as well as non-region opponents Baldwin (Class AAAA), Josey (Class AAA) and Greene County (Class AA) the past two seasons. "We set records on offense, on defense. We were competitive even with that type of schedule."
The Bulldogs went 0-10, 1-9 and 2-8 in Harris' first three seasons and went 4-6 four times and 5-6 in 2012, earning the lone playoff trip under Harris, a Hancock Central graduate. That was the team's first postseason visit since 2006. Harris is currently helping out at Twiggs County.
Roger Metts resigned at Jeff Davis this month after going 19-31 in five seasons, highlighted by a 7-3 season in 2011, his first. The Yellow Jackets, who went 16-34 the previous five seasons, will have their sixth head coach since the century began. Metts will remain at Jeff Davis as a teacher, baseball coach and athletics director.
Eric McDonald's resignation was accepted by the Montgomery County school board Monday. McDonald was also the Eagles' athletics director, an assistant principal. He was 4-36 in four seasons.
The Eagles went 0-10 in 2015, matching their record in McDonald's first season, 2012, and marking their seventh winless season since 1996. Montgomery County has had one-win seasons five times in that span.
They add to Middle Georgia openings at Rutland, Westfield and Tattnall Square.
Other openings of note are at Griffin, Grovetown, Jordan and Valdosta. Former Northside standout Jason Respert was let go at Douglas County last month after going 12-29 in four seasons at the Class AAAAAA program that hasn't had a winning season since 2007.
Toombs County recently hired Richard Marsh, who was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern University, an NAIA program in Florida, last year. He went 53-40 as head coach at Thomasville from 2005-12 with seven trips to the postseason, while also leading the weightlifting team to state titles.
Marsh was the defensive coordinator at Valdosta from 2003-05 and also has coached in Florida. He is 110-87 in 17 seasons as a head coach.
Carver-Columbus hired former Alabama State head coach Reggie Barlow.
