Central keeps rolling with big win over Jordan
There was no post-December slump to be found Tuesday night for the Central Chargers. After winning five of six games in holiday season tournaments at Washington County and Jones County during the break, the Chargers kept steaming forward against Jordan as they returned to GHSA Region 2-AAA play, pasting the Red Jackets 94-49.
Central (12-2 overall, 5-1 Region 2-AAA) blew the game wide open with an explosive second quarter, turning an 18-15 lead after the first eight minutes into a 47-28 halftime lead. The Chargers took a big move toward putting the game away with a 10-2 run to begin the quarter. Four Central players scored at least 10 points, led by 22 from Kentrevious Jones.
THREE WHO MATTERED
Jones: Despite picking up his third foul in the second quarter, Central's big forward managed to impose his will close to the basket, giving Jordan (6-9, 4-3) a headache in the paint. He scored two baskets in a row, one off of an offensive rebound early in the second quarter to help the Chargers race to a 39-22 lead.
Antarius McCoy: A strong all-around night from McCoy was one of many offensive highlights for Central. That included a big 3-pointer early in the second quarter that, like the play of Jones, turned matters greatly in Central's favor.
Rakwon Iverson: Like McCoy and Jones, Iverson also made a big night, pouring in 15 points. He sank an open jump shot with ease to cap the 10-2 run to start the second quarter, breaking the resolve of Jordan's upset bid.
WORTH MENTIONING
Nice passing: There was more to Central's big win than a total of 11 players scoring at least two points. The Chargers also did a masterful job of moving the ball around and taking care of offensive possessions. Central's 25-15 assist-to-turnover ratio was a season high.
ALSO TUESDAY NIGHT
Central's girls routed an overmatched Jordan team, 78-27 as three of the Chargers' starters scored in double figures.
Central (7-4, 5-1) seized control early, leading 22-8 after a quarter of play. The Chargers were led by ReNesha Goolsby's 12 points. Also chipping in were Jenya Wilder with 11 and Kamry Hassan with 10.
THEY SAID IT
Central head coach Andre Taylor on the Chargers start: "For us right now, it's all about keeping on building momentum. We would have liked to have won all six of our tournament games, but going five of six is something we feel good about. This is one of the better starts to a season that we've had since I've been here."
