Appeals dominate GHSA reclassification meeting agenda
The GHSA's new rule concerning out-of-county enrollment has caused several schools to appeal a potential higher placing in the next classification cycle.
The agenda for Wednesday's reclassification committee meeting has 19 appeals listed. Seventeen of those appeals concern a school's out-of-county percentage.
Starting with the 2016 reclassification cycle, a GHSA member school that has three percent or more of its students enrolled from outside of the county it is in will be subject to being moved up one class. The rule only affects schools in the 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A classifications.
Among the schools on the appeals agenda are Bleckley County (9.6 percent out-of-county), Crisp County (6.7 percent), East Laurens (4.1 percent), Jeff Davis (3.5 percent) and Vidalia (8.7 percent), all of whom had out-of-county enrollment figures listed at three percent or higher on the enrollment report issued by the GHSA last week.
Following the appeals, the reclassification committee will assign schools to classifications. According to a post on the GHSA website, those classification assignments will be published Thursday. Initial region assignments will be determined Dec. 1.
