No surprises as GHSA finalizes Class A brackets
There were no late curveballs out of the GHSA office in Thomaston for Stratford or FPD on Wednesday, as both teams solidified their spots in the Class A private school football playoffs.
Neither team was affected by appeals Wednesday, nor were their projected opponents. Stratford, the 10th seed, will go to Calvary Day on Nov. 20, while No. 16 seed FPD heads to top-seeded Prince Avenue Christian.
All Class A playoff teams are off this week.
The Stratford-Calvary Day winner will take on the Athens Christian-Pinecrest winner Nov. 27, while the Savannah Christian-Landmark Christian winner will take on the FPD-Prince Avenue winner.
The other first-round match-ups in Class A private are Pacelli against defending champion Mount Paran Christian, Mount Pisgah Christian against Eagle's Landing Christian, Brookstone vs. Aquinas and Christian Heritage against Athens Academy.
There was no movement from projected matchups in the Class A public school bracket.
Dooly County, the No. 12 seed, will travel to No. 5 Clinch County on Nov. 20. Johnson County (No. 13) heads to Randolph-Clay (No. 4), Wilkinson County (No. 14) heads to Irwin County (No. 3), Telfair County (No. 15) goes to ECI (No. 2), and Twiggs County (No. 16) heads to top-seeded Marion County.
Also facing off in the first round of the 16-team public school field: Commerce against Charlton County, Trion against Turner County and Mount Zion (Carroll County) at Lincoln County.
There will be a new Class A public champion.
Hawkinsville finished 5-5 and in fifth place in Region 4-A. The Red Devils finished No. 21 in the power ratings.
Also falling just short in Class A public were Treutlen (18th) and Hancock Central (20th). Treutlen finished 0.14 points behind Twiggs County, which qualified by a scant 0.01 point over Terrell County.
FPD qualified by 0.2 points over Hebron Christian. Mount de Sales (21st) was the closest non-qualifier from Middle Georgia.
