Sunday Morning Quarterback: What we learned
Long wait is over: Mary Persons battled West Laurens for a 20-16 win in the GHSA Region 2-AAAA title game, and in the process, won the Bulldogs' first region title since 1997 -- Dan Pitts' final season as head coach -- and finished their first perfect regular season since 1994. Head coach Brian Nelson now has three 10-win seasons, and is 39-8 in his fourth season.
Big seasons, no playoffs: Both Howard and Central posted 6-4 regular seasons, with Central achieving its first winning season in a decade and Howard finishing doubling its previous high for wins in a season. Both teams, however, failed to make the playoffs. Howard's playoff path opened up when Upson-Lee defeated Veterans in double-overtime, but the Huskies didn't take care of business at Baldwin, losing 20-13. Central did what it needed to do, defeating Kendrick 52-22, but the Chargers didn't get the outside help they needed, with both Westside and Spencer winning big.
Fromm got, well, better: Between overeating in the pregame meal, almost overdoing in pregame warmup, and a remarkably humid November night, Houston County quarterback Jake Fromm wasn't feeling well. In fact, twice in the first quarter, all of that -- and a little pressure from the task at hand -- led to Fromm throwing up. "In the middle of a drive, I felt it coming. 'All right, it's gonna happen, let's do it.'" He threw for nearly 250 yards in the first half alone.
Big streak is done: That Macon County beat Lamar County 36-22 for the Region 4-AA title is one thing. But the Bulldogs pulled off a huge feat, handing Lamar County its first home region loss since Oct. 29, 2010, a stretch of 15 games during which Lamar County won by 21 points a dozen times, and by 35 points nine times. It's the first time Macon County has won back-to-back region titles since the mid-1990s.
FPD makes it ... unofficially: The official GHSA Class A power ratings will be published Tuesday. But a projection posted by a longtime Georgia Varsity Sports Vent contributor has the Vikings listed 16th among private schools and in the playoffs. Vent poster CheerTigerDad has FPD traveling to top-seeded Prince Avenue Christian on Nov. 20, while the same projection has Stratford finishing 10th and heading to Calvary Day. Making the public school bracket, according to the projection, will be Dooly County (11th), Johnson County (12th), Wilkinson County (14th) and Twiggs County (16th). The full projections are available on the Class A football message board at www.gavsv.com.
GISA playoffs: Westfield, a 41-6 winner over Trinity Christian-Dublin, will host Brookwood, a 23-0 winner over Heritage, on Friday in the GISA Class AAA quarterfinals. John Milledge, a 31-6 winner over Bulloch Academy, will travel to Loganville Christian, a 21-20 overtime winner over Southland. Gatewood, a 14-3 winner over Frederica, will travel to Deerfield-Windsor, a 42-19 winner over Holy Spirit Prep. In Class AA, Windsor, a 58-22 winner over First Presbyterian Christian, will travel to Piedmont, while Robert Toombs will head to Southwest Georgia after defeating Brentwood 48-12.
Hornets in postseason form: Westfield thundered past Trinity Christian 41-6 in the first round of the GISA Class AAA, gaining 419 yards in total offense. Westfield has won eight straight postseason games, and scored 40 or more in five of them. Sorry, Brookwood, you're up next.
GICAA playoffs: Covenant, the top seed in the GICAA Division I-AA playoffs, hosts Community Christian in a semifinal Friday. The winner will take on the Calvary Christian-Creekside Christian winner on Nov. 20 for the championship, with Covenant hosting if it beats Community Christian. In Division I-A, second-seeded Fullington will host Skipstone in a semifinal Friday, while top-seeded Thomas Jefferson hosts Unity Christian in the other semifinal. In the eight-man classification, CFCA travels to Praise Academy on Friday for a quarterfinal contest.
Congrats to Bulldogs and Indians: Mary Persons and Dodge County are the lone Middle Georgia GHSA teams to survive the regular season undefeated, thanks to Houston County's win over Northside.
