First win at McConnell-Talbert special one for Jones County
WARNER ROBINS -- It seems the Jones County Greyhounds set new standards for the program just about every week.
Tyric Solomon put the icing on top of a huge 34-10 victory for Jones County over Warner Robins, taking a handoff and throwing it to his twin, Terell Solomon, for a 34-yard touchdown reception. The win marks the Greyhounds' first win at McConnell-Talbert Stadium in program history.
"We just put that (halfback pass) in this week for this game," Tyric Solomon said. "Every day, we practiced and practiced it over and over, and luckily it worked. I didn't know I was going to get like that after I threw it, though. That was a little rough, but I'm just so happy (Terrell) caught it. That was amazing. Twin to twin. This win meant so much to us."
Jones County (9-1, 8-1 GHSA Region 2-AAAAA) took a 14-3 lead into halftime due in part to a huge interception by Tyric Solomon that eventually led to quarterback Bradley Hunnicutt finding a wide open Chandler Ramage behind the Demons' secondary for a 19-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive.
And after a Hunnicutt screen pass to Nick Singleton produced a 37-yard gain down to the Warner Robins 1, Terell Solomon punched the ball across the goal line on the very next play.
But Warner Robins (7-3, 6-3) answered in the third quarter, as quarterback Ivan Corbin led the offense down the field along, capping it off with a 3-yard run on a quarterback keeper to cut the Jones County lead to 14-10.
The Greyhounds, however, scored 20 unanswered points to end the contest, as a Singleton 57-yard run and a Ramage 18-yard run with a little more than a minute to play sandwiched the Tyric Solomon halfback pass for a score.
"I think this win was really big for our community," Jones County head coach Justin Rogers said. "I think the community talks about it more than we do inside the football facilities because our mindset is always that it is just another game, but it is big for the city of Gray, but it is good to be able to give something back to the community to be proud of."
As for the Demons, penalties stalled multiple drives and they weren't able to be consistent enough in the passing game to move the ball down field. And while Javian Bradford-Jackson rushed for 145 yards on 19 carries, he was only able to break loose for a couple of big runs.
Warner Robins begins postseason play next, and head coach Bryan Way feels there is much to be corrected before that contest.
"Penalties, after the whistle penalties and bad decisions kept us from moving the ball," Way said. "We played a little better the second half and we start winning the third quarter and then we give up a big play. We drive back down and it isn't hard to execute field goals, but we didn't execute it. We can't continue to beat ourselves. We are our own worst enemy on both sides of the ball."
