Twiggs County fighting for playoff spot
For the first time in six years, Twiggs County has a fighting chance to go to playoffs.
Ashley Harden, Twiggs County's first-year head coach, has led the Cobras to a 4-5 record, and they have a chance to get into the GHSA Class A public school playoffs.
Twiggs County hosts Lincoln County on Friday in Region 7-A action.
"Right now our playoff hopes are kind of out of our hands," Harden said.
But the team's season has changed the program's hopes. The Cobras have undergone massive transition, going through five head coaches in six years.
Dexter Copeland was the Twiggs County football coach from 2001-09, leading the team to playoffs seven times. After he left for Baldwin, Twiggs County only won seven games before Copeland's return in 2014. His arrival was shortlived, however, as the Cobras struggled to a 1-9 record and Copeland left again to take over at Macon County.
"When I came here I told the kids, 'Commit to the Cobra. That Cobras gonna always be here," Harden said. "Coaches may come and go."
He added that the team has bought into this idea, and "it shows."
Lincoln County is 8-1 this season and owns a 9-2 record in its series with Twiggs County. The Cobras haven't reached the playoffs since 2009.
