FPD has playoffs in sight
A little more than a month ago, FPD head coach Greg Moore sensed an urgency from his team that it may not be able to get into the GHSA Class A playoffs.
Since that time, however, the Vikings have battled back to win three straight games and currently sit at No. 16 in the Class A power ratings, and 16th is the final playoff spot, as they host Hancock Central in the final game of the regular season.
"I'm really excited for our kids and the opportunity they have," Moore said. "A month ago, it didn't look like the final game of the year would be of any significance and it now is. They have rallied themselves around our seniors and focused our attention on playing very good football as a team. I'm excited for our players."
FPD more than likely needs a win over Hancock Central to land itself a berth in the playoffs.
Hancock Central (4-5, 2-2) comes in off of a 66-21 rout of Georgia Military College and is 3-1 on the road this season.
But the Vikings are coming off impressive offensive showings of their own. FPD has rolled up 114 points in the past three games, including 52 in a big road victory against Twiggs County last week.
"We've done some of the little things you have to do to win football games," Moore said. "We are playing defense and maintaining the ball in terms of establishing a very positive time of possession in our favor. But the absolute most important thing we have done is reached a point where within our own team, nobody cared who got the credit. We have started to put things together as a whole team."
And although Hancock Central hasn't rolled out a lot of wins, Moore knows how tough of a team it can be at times.
"(Hancock Central) is dangerous in a lot of aspects," Moore said. "They are extremely fast and skilled on the perimeter and have breakaway type of ability. They are an extremely dangerous football team. If you're inconsistent against them, it can really hurt you. We have to stay away from those inconsistencies."
