Second place a mixed bag: Barring an unlikely result this week between Jackson and Rutland, the top two seeds have been set in GHSA Region 2-AAA. Jackson (7-2, 6-1 Region 2-AAA) clinches the region with a win over Rutland (1-8, 0-7), while Peach County (8-2, 7-1) has completed its regular season and will be the No. 2 seed unless the Hurricanes shock the Red Devils. That No. 2 seed and first-round home game, which Peach County clinched with its win Friday over Westside, comes with a price: The winner of the first-round game involving the Trojans and the No. 3 seed from Region 3-AAA likely will have to travel to defending Class AAA champion and top-ranked Calhoun for the second round of the playoffs.

Northeast playing for the playoffs: Northeast picked up its first victory of the season Friday, defeating Bleckley County. The bigger news, however, is that the Raiders (1-8, 1-3 Region 4-AA) are now in position to claim the No. 4 seed in a winner-take-all contest against Monticello on Friday at Thompson Stadium.

Covenant in charge: Covenant's victory over Creekside on Friday put the Rams in control of the No. 1 seed for the GICAA Division I-AA playoffs entering the final week of the regular season. A win over Life Christian next week would give Covenant home-field advantage in the four-team playoffs, including the Nov. 20 championship game.

Howard still hungry: It would have been easy for Howard to be down entering the game with Veterans, but the Huskies played like it was the must-win situation it was, getting a superb night from the wide receivers and answering every Veterans rally. Now, the Warhawks are in Region 2-AAAA's must-win position.

Suspense killers: Warner Robins will take solid momentum into the game-for-seeding in Region 2-AAAAA against Jones County, killing Grovetown's hopes early in the 45-6 win, dominating up front. But the Demons are still inconsistent, so which group shows up makes for an interesting week.

The countdown is on: As expected, there was no suspense Saturday in Northside's blowout win over Cross Creek and none in Houston County's 45-12 win Friday over Evans. So Friday night at McConnell-Talbert, it's No. 1 against No. 6, which may get more attention than the region relevance. A three-way tie is possible with Northside, Houston County and Jones County. There's also the possibility of a three-way tie for the second seed.

Big one set for Barnesville: Macon County will visit Lamar County for the 4-AA title, but Putnam County sure made Macon County sweat before losing 21-18 Friday. Putnam County has locked down the third seed, the War Eagles' first playoff trip since 2011.
