Dontrez Johnson leads FPD past Twiggs County

Dontrez Johnson scored four touchdowns and ran for 107 yards to lead FPD to a 52-38 win over Twiggs County on Friday night.

Quarterback Will McCormick threw for 204 yards and ran for another 84 as the Vikings finished with 503 yards of offense.

"I thought we played a great offensive first half and did exactly what we wanted to," said FPD head coach Greg Moore, whose team improves to 5-4. "The second half wasn't as good, but the team we played probably had something to do with that. We told our kids even though we had a big lead at the half, that Twiggs County would not go away, and they didn't. I am very proud of the way we played and at this time of the year, a win is a win.

"We knew it was pretty much a must-win for us, and I am excited that we will be in a position next weekend to maybe get into the playoffs."

Twiggs County also had a spectacular night on offense, finishing with for 462 yards of total offense, including 441 on the ground. The Cobras grabbed the early lead on a Javoris Smith 4-yard run. But FPD answered that touchdown with three of its own. Johnson went 40 yards for the first, then went in from 5 yards at the beginning of the second quarter, and McCormick got into the act a few minutes later with a 5-yard run.

After Twiggs County scored on a Ja'Mon Height run, the Vikings exploded, scoring 17 more points in the next seven minutes to take a 45-14 halftime lead.

"The way we tackled in the first half was embarrassing, and I don't think we could have tackled my 10-year-old son," said Twiggs County head coach Ashley Harden, whose team dropped to 4-5. "We made a decision to come out and play our best football in the second half, and we played much better, but it just wasn't enough."

To start the second half, Twiggs County got the second of three touchdowns from Smith, who ran for 210 yards to cut the FPD lead to 45-22, but FPD answered with a McCormick-to-Daniel Weaver touchdown that made it a 52-32 game heading into the fourth quarter.

Twiggs County scored 16 unanswered points in the quarter, but in the end, five turnovers were too much to overcome for the Cobras.

"We didn't do a great job of tackling in the second half, and we will take a good look at how it looked on film, but I just have to give Coach Harden and his team a lot of the credit for that," Moore said. "Those guys gave it all they had for 48 minutes."
