Middle Georgia teams still alive for softball state titles

Middle Georgia will have at least two teams playing for GHSA softball championships Saturday in Columbus, and there could be a couple of more teams joining in the fun.

Vidalia (Class AA) and GMC (Class A public school) have earned their way into the championship round without a loss in their respective brackets. Vidalia will play at 12:30 p.m., while GMC will play at noon.

FPD and Stratford will face off at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the right to advance to the Class A private school championship. The Vikings won their first game Friday, beating Brookstone 7-1, but they lost to Eagle's Landing Christian 4-1 to drop into the losers' bracket. They will face the Eagles, who won three games Friday (7-1 over Christian Heritage, 5-4 over Brookstone and 5-4 over Prince Avenue Christian) to stay alive.

The winner of the FPD-Stratford game will have to beat ELCA twice for the title.

Tattnall Square was eliminated from the Class A private school bracket with a 7-5 loss to Calvary Day on Friday morning.

In Class AAAAA, Houston County is still alive, but it will have some work to do to win the title. The Bears lost 3-0 on Friday night to Chapel Hill to drop into the losers' bracket. They will face Greenbrier, which eliminated Jones County 18-3. The Greyhounds beat Northside-Columbus 7-1 and Dalton 5-1 earlier Friday.

If Houston County advances, it will have to beat Chapel Hill twice for the title.

In Class AAAA, Veterans was eliminated 10-0 by Walnut Grove, which later eliminated West Laurens 8-0.

GMC will face either Trion or Echols County for the Class A public school title and will have to be beaten twice. The same is true for Vidalia when it plays either Bryan County or Gordon Lee.
