Playoff outlook for other Middle Georgia regions
REGION 1-AAAA
CRISP COUNTY 2-6, 1-2
Who's in: Thomas County Central in subregion A, Bainbridge in subregion B.
Contending: Almost everybody -- except Albany (0-8, 0-3), Dougherty (3-4, 0-3) and Americus-Sumter (2-6, 0-3) -- since the region is subdivided
Favorites: Bainbridge is undefeated, while Monroe, Cairo and Worth County are 5-3 overall and have one region loss.
Format: Sub-region winners play a championship game. Second-place teams host third-place teams for the final two playoff spots. Fourth- and fifth-place play a final game.
Scouting report: Crisp County is in fourth in subregion A, a game behind Monroe and Cairo.
Odds are long for the Cougars to make the playoffs. They would need to upset Monroe and have winless Albany stun Cairo to remain in any conversation. Albany's past three losses are by 34, 34 and 43.
REGION 1A-AAA
DODGE COUNTY 8-0, 5-0
TOOMBS COUNTY 1-7, 0-5
Who's in: Dodge County in subregion A, Southeast Bulloch in subregion B.
Contending: Dodge County, Pierce County (6-2, 4-1), Cook (6-3, 4-2), Appling County (4-4, 4-2) are in the A race. The B side favorites are Southeast Bulloch (5-3, 4-0) and Jenkins (5-3, 3-1) with three others mathematically alive.
Format: Sub-region No. 1s host No. 4s from the other region, No.2s host No. 3s from the other region.
Scouting report: It's a tough situation for the favorites, like Dodge County. The Indians could be 9-0 and lose the crossover game and sit home.
That would be an earth-shaking upset, considering the Indians, with a win Friday over a tough Pierce County team, would be playing Savannah.
The Blue Jackets have cracked 10 points four times this season and been shut out twice. The Indians have held five opponents to single digits with a shutout.
The B side is stronger this year than a year ago, with three teams a cinch to finish at least with a .500 regular season, and the bottom teams a little better. Southeast Bulloch is again the top team, but the Yellow Jackets lost 34-27 to Appling County in last year's crossover.
But Dodge County has to get past Pierce County, which won last year's meeting 55-36 and are probably a little antsy after losing 55-42 at home last week to Appling County.
REGION 3-AAA
WASHINGTON COUNTY 3-5, 3-1
Who's in: Laney (6-2, 4-0).
Contending: Washington County (3-5, 3-1), Josey (5-4, 3-2), Butler (3-5, 2-2), Hephzibah (3-5, 1-2), Westside-Augusta (2-6, 1-3)
Scouting report: Washington County has done a nice job of rebounding from an almost historic start to be in very good shape for a playoff spot.
The Golden Hawks win a head-to-head tiebreaker with Josey and Butler, the two teams next in line. A win Friday over Hephzibah clinches a postseason trip for the Golden Hawks and a second seed, which means a home game.
Which means somebody must come to a rejuvenated House of Pain.
REGION 1-AA
FITZGERALD 7-1, 3-1
Who's in: Brooks County (7-2, 5-0); Fitzgerald (7-1, 3-1).
Contending: Early County (5-3-1, 3-2), Pelham (4-4, 1-3), Seminole County 3-5, 1-3), Berrien (2-6, 1-3), Thomasville (1-6, 1-3).
Scouting report: The race here is for fourth place and the chance to most likely get hammered on the road against the Region 4-AA champ.
Fitzgerald's lone loss is to Brooks County, and should a monstrous upset happen Friday by Berrien -- which hasn't beaten Fitzgerald since 1995.
But Fitzgerald makes the "who's in" category based in history and the present. The Purple Hurricanes last non-playoff season was 1999.
REGION 2-AA
VIDALIA 5-3, 3-2
JEFF DAVIS 4-4, 1-4
Who's in: Benedictine (8-0, 5-0)
Contending: Bryan County (4-4, 4-1), Vidalia, McIntosh County Academy (3-2), Bacon County 4-4, 2-3), Long County (3-5, 2-3).
Scouting report: Five teams in the hunt for four spots makes for a fun final two weeks.
Vidalia has a battle, with Jeff Davis -- out of the playoffs, but going for its first non-losing season since 2011 -- and second-place Bryan County.
The Indians will probably get some help this week with Benedictine a huge favorite to beat McIntosh, but Bacon County is a three-loss team very much in the hunt Long County has first and second place left, so the odds are against the Blue Tide.
Expect the final three spots to come down to the final week. Vidalia could very easily need a win over Bryan County to make the playoffs, especially if Jeff Davis pulls off the upset (and first win over Vidalia since 1999).
REGION 3-AA
DUBLIN 6-3, 2-3
EAST LAURENS 4-4, 0-4
Who's in: Jefferson County (6-2, 4-0)
Contending: Screven County (7-1, 3-1), Metter (6-2, 3-1), Swainsboro (4-4, 2-2), Dublin.
Scouting report: Dublin needs a win and a lot of help.
The Irish finish the regular season with Screven County, which is tied for second with Metter.
Dublin has already lost to the other three teams higher up in the standings, so the Irish can't really rely on tiebreakers. They need to win, and have Swainsboro lose to Metter and Jefferson County, which could easily happen.
But Swainsboro has won five straight over Metter, and only one has been close.
If Dublin loses to Screven County, the Irish are done. If they win and Swainsboro wins Friday, Dublin's season ends. If Dublin wins and Swainsboro loses, the suspense continues.
