GHSA Class A public school playoff scenarios

In Class A public, the only teams that qualify automatically are region champions. The rest of the 16-team field in both brackets are filled out through a power rating formula.

Listed by each team is power rating points and overall record.

PRETTY SAFE

11. Dooly County (11.05, 5-3)

Dooly County should be fairly safe with a split of the final two games, against No. 12 private Brookstone and No. 23 public Greenville.

12. Twiggs County (10.80, 4-4)

Friday's game at FPD will have power rating implications for both teams, perhaps more than next week's region crossover. The Cobras are doing better than expected under first-year head coach Ashley Harden, and it might take just one win in the final two games to get them into the postseason.

13. Wilkinson County (10.56, 5-3)

Hosting sub-region champion Stratford on Friday provides the potential for a significant power ratings boost should the Warriors win. The margin for error is slightly tighter than what Twiggs County has to deal with, but one win in the final two games, barring some strange happenings, might just be enough.

ON THE BUBBLE

14. Telfair County (10.44, 4-4)

Telfair County is barely on the good side of the power rating bubble. The Trojans won't get much with a win over No. 34 Lanier County and would have to get their first win ever against Clinch County next week to, well, clinch it. So their postseason hopes lie, to a point, with teams in other regions.

15. Johnson County (10.32, 4-4)

Johnson County hosts Wheeler County and then plays in the crossover, so it's hoping not to be jumped by region champs or other bubble teams pulling off upsets. A split makes life very stressful.

18. Hancock Central (9.79, 3-5)

Hancock Central is 0.23 points behind Randolph-Clay for the final playoff spot. The Bulldogs are at GMC on Friday heading into crossover week, so there won't be a lot of opponent's victory points available. Likely needs two wins to have a shot.

19. Treutlen (9.72, 5-4)

Treutlen will have do the waiting and sweating this week. The Vikings have a slim shot, slimmer with the number of higher-ranked bubble teams playing each other.

21. Hawkinsville (9.54, 5-4)

Getting a chance to defending its Class A public school title is going to take a lot falling Hawkinsville's way. A win over Pacelli (No. 15 in private school rankings) is a minimal help. Higher-ranked teams (like Twiggs County-FPD, Wilkinson County-Stratford and Hebron Christian-Athens Academy, among others) playing each other will just about do the Red Devils in.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

24. Taylor County (8.36, 3-5)

Taylor County could make things interesting if the Vikings up and shock the state with wins over Marion County (No. 3 public) and Pacelli, but they'll need to do that and get a remarkable amount of help.

OUT

26. Wheeler County (8.12, 3-5); 29. Wilcox County (7.78, 2-6); 35. GMC (5.71, 1-7) ; 38. Montgomery County (4.97, 0-8).
