CFCA wins GICAA fall softball title
The CFCA softball team claimed its first GICAA fall softball title Saturday, sweeping the best-of-three championship series against Thomas Jefferson.
Playing at home, the Lancers (25-5) posted 7-3 and 10-2 victories.
"It's been a really good two years," CFCA head coach Josh McLendon said. "Collectively, we won 46 games in the last two years. This group of girls have school records galore and were really impressive the last two years."
The big moment Saturday came in the fourth inning of the opener. Hannah Duncan's two-run homer broke open a game that was tied at 3.
In the second game, Duncan went 4-for-5 with four RBI.
"That pumped us up and gave us the lead," McLendon said. "She smashed it out of the park. It was a no-doubter."
Marilynn NeSmith nearly had a perfect day offensively. She reached safely in her first eight at-bats before flying out in the seventh inning of the second game.
NeSmith, who scored three runs and had three stolen bases in the opener, finished the season with a .570 batting average.
"I've never seen a kid have that incredible of a series," McLendon said.
Jada Jackson (23-3) was the winning pitcher in both games, striking out nine total. Savannah Hunnicutt had four hits on the day, including a solo homer in the sixth inning of the opener, while Carley Ingle also had four hits in the two games.
