Veterans, Rutland win GHSA region softball titles

Veterans and Rutland were among the Middle Georgia teams claiming GHSA region softball championships Thursday.

In Region 2-AAAA play in Dublin, Veterans scored two runs in the top of the sixth to pull out a 7-6 victory over West Laurens. Sarah Wilkerson doubled twice and had four RBI for the Warhawks, while Avery Lamb struck out seven and didn’t allow a West Laurens runner past second in the final two innings en route to the win.

Rutland claimed an easy 15-3 win over Jackson in Region 2-AAA at the Western Little League fields. Courtney Gay had three RBI in a game that lasted just three innings.

GMC topped Tattnall Square 5-0 in the Region 7-A title game in Milledgeville. Sutton Long homered for the Bulldogs.

Greenbrier won three games at Houston County to win the Region 2-AAAAA title. Greenbrier topped Jones County 7-1 before sweeping Houston County 3-0 and 6-4.

In Region 4-AA, Lamar County won 3-2 at Bleckley County.

First-round GHSA playoff action is scheduled for Wednesday, with Game 3s set for the following day. In Class A public and private, the opening round is slated for Oct. 21-22.
