TOP FIVE

TATTNALL SQUARE AT STRATFORD

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Tattnall leads 26-21.

Last meeting: Tattnall won 24-7 in 2014.

Key Trojans: Aubrien Kemp (Sr., FS); Ahmad Barron (Jr., RB); Christian Rodgers (Jr., DT).

Key Eagles: Quintez Cephus (Sr., SE/DB); O’Showen Williams (Sr., RB/DB); Sim Patrick (Sr., QB).

Scouting report: This game took on some urgency for Tattnall after the Trojans were shut out 26-0 last week at Wilkinson County. The Trojans need a win to get back in the race for a spot in the GHSA Region 7-A championship game, and power rating points are a concern, as well. At 3-2, Tattnall is sitting in 20th, the only team in Class A private with a winning record that’s sitting outside the top 16. Stratford, meanwhile, comes in off a big win over FPD and is looking to finish the week in a tie for first in the sub-region with the winner of the Wilkinson County-Twiggs County game.

MARY PERSONS AT HOWARD

Game time/location: 7:30 p.m./Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Series history: Mary Persons leads 5-0.

Last meeting: Mary Persons won 47-7 in 2014.

Key Bulldogs: Elijah Hawkins (Sr., DB); Zach Harvey (Jr., RB); Dan O’Neal (Jr., DL); Malik Herring (Jr., DE); Dilon Treadwell (Sr., OL).

Key Huskies: JaQwun Stinson (Sr., RB/LB); Courviosier King (Sr., QB); Sean Walker (Sr., LB); Tyjae Lockett (Sr., DL).

Scouting report: This series has been completely one-sided, with Mary Persons outscoring Howard 204-23. But this Howard team is by far the best in the program’s short history, reaching the five-win mark for the first time last week. For all the talk of Howard head coach Barney Hester being dedicated to the running game during his days at Tattnall, he is reminding people this year that one of his first coaching jobs was as a receivers coach on Erk Russell’s staff at Georgia Southern, turning loose a passing game powered by King, who now has 1,051 yards on the season. Mary Persons had two close calls in a 5-0 start (double-overtime against Jackson, a nail-biter against LaGrange), and the Bulldogs are coming up on the most difficult part of their schedule.

FPD AT MOUNT DE SALES

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: FPD leads 19-11-1.

Last meeting: FPD won 42-21 in 2014.

Key Vikings: Will McCormick (Sr., QB); Reggie Gantt (Sr., FB); Torrian Bradley-McSwain (Jr., CB).

Key Cavaliers: Brandon Crowder (Sr., DB); Nic Allman (Sr., WR); Adrian Hardwick (Soph., RB); Adrian Lester (Sr., DL).

Scouting report: After losses in their Region 7A-A openers, both teams will be trying to rebound. McCormick put up some big passing numbers in the Vikings’ loss to Stratford, throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns, but he also was intercepted twice, with one going back for a 56-yard touchdown by the Eagles’ Quintez Cephus. Mount de Sales hosts three straight Region 7A-A opponents, but the Cavaliers’ only win this season came against a one-win GMC squad that lost to all four of Macon-Bibb County’s GHSA private school teams. Both teams sit outside of the top 16 in the GHSA Class A private school power rankings.

WEST LAURENS AT VETERANS

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Veterans leads 3-2.

Last meeting: West Laurens won 28-23 in 2014.

Key Raiders: Darius Bradford (Jr., RB); Trey Mason (Sr., DL); Greg Covin (Jr., DB); Jarett Henry (Sr., LB); Shundrekus Smith (Jr., DL).

Key Warhawks: Isaiah Gray (Sr., WR/CB); Logan Hurless (Sr., OL/DL); BJ Brown (Sr., C); Desjuan Harris (Sr., RB); Logan Byrd (Sr., QB/P).

Scouting report: West Laurens lost key offensive weapons from a year ago but has scored nine more points while surrendering an impressive 62 fewer points. Veterans’ offensive points are up (by 50) as are defensive (by only five). There will be little fancy or finesse in this offensive lineman’s dream game.

WILKINSON COUNTY AT TWIGGS COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Wilkinson County leads 12-7.

Last meeting: Wilkinson County won 44-26 in 2014.

Key Warriors: Akeem Jackson (Jr., RB); Tylan Grable (Soph., QB); Jai Boyd (Sr., RB).

Key Cobras: Ja’mon Height (Jr., RB); Neddrick Nichols (Sr., OL); Nate Freeny (Jr., DL); Kelvin Jenkins (Sr., LB).

Scouting report: Twiggs County suddenly has found a spark and is on a roll, while Wilkinson County quietly has turned into a sub-region favorite. The Warriors have had the Cobras’ number, winning six straight in the series, four wins coming by at least 32 points.
