Houston County hosts Region 2-AAAAA softball Final Four

The first pitch is set for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, but the intensity will have a prime-time feel when the GHSA Region 2-AAAAA softball tournament convenes at Houston County. That’s when Northside faces Houston County in the first of four games as the region tournament continues to crown a champion and set up state tournament seedings.

Warner Robins was eliminated by Greenbrier on Tuesday, losing twice, ending the Demons’ season and advancing the defending state champs.

Jones County faces Greenbrier at 1 p.m. The losers of the first two games then play at 3 p.m. and the winners at 5 p.m. Action continues at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Northside is 16-12, according to Tuesday’s GHSA region standings, while Houston County is 21-6. Greenbrier is ranked third in Class AAAAA in the latest ScoreAtlanta poll while Houston County is eighth.

Bears head coach Angela Crawford said the Middle Georgia side of the region had a strong season.

“Warner Robins, their region record is deceiving (and) wasn’t that good, but they were in a lot of games,” Crawford said. “They played us two games very close. And they played three great games against Northside.”

She said the same went with games against Jones County.

Northside is breaking a state tournament playoff slump.

Region 2-AAAA has reached its Final Four stage, as well, at the Southern Pines Complex in Dublin.

Mary Persons faces Perry and Veterans takes on West Laurens at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, with winners’ and losers’ bracket games to follow at 7 p.m. Then there is a game at 4 p.m. on Thursday with the championship to follow at 6, and the “if” game at 8 p.m.
