Friday’s Middle Georgia high school football capsules

PEACH COUNTY AT CENTRAL

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./Henderson Stadium.

Series history: Peach County leads 9-2.

Last meeting: Peach County won 33-0 in 2014.

Key Trojans: Tyrique McGhee (Sr., QB/DB); Fletcher Hooks (Jr., OL/DL); Kevin Nixon (Jr., LB); James Jackson (Jr., RB).

Key Chargers: Derrick Evans (Sr., QB/OLB); Antonio Sanders Jr. (Jr., RB); Ivory Childers (Sr., WR).

Scouting report: Peach County has won every meeting between the teams in this century, and Central has been shut out in each of the past four meetings. The Trojans’ defense is starting to take shape under new defensive coordinator Lee Campbell, not allowing a score in the past 10 quarters, but Peach County’s passing game has been slow to develop this season. Central, meanwhile, has one of the most prolific passers in Middle Georgia in Evans and balance in the backfield in Sanders, and this Chargers team is arguably two plays short of a 5-0 start.

FPD AT STRATFORD

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Tied 19-19-1.

Last meeting: Stratford won 28-21 in 2014.

Key Vikings: Will McCormick (Sr., QB); Reggie Gantt (Sr., FB); Torrian Bradley-McSwain (Jr., CB).

Key Eagles: Quintez Cephus (Sr., SE/DB); O’Showen Williams (Sr., RB/DB); Sim Patrick (Sr., QB).

Scouting report: Just the mention of this rivalry is enough to get the competition going between these two programs, and last year’s close finish certainly rekindled the rivalry after four years of separation between the GHSA and the GISA. FPD had some ball control issues early this season that seem to have been addressed, while Stratford has worked in a new quarterback while moving last year’s signal-caller to receiver. Williams didn’t play last week against GMC, and his 11 yards per carry average will be big for Stratford if he is able to participate this week.

WESTSIDE AT JACKSON

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Westside leads 1-0.

Last meeting: Westside won 31-14 in 2014.

Key Seminoles: Savion Knowlton (Jr., QB); Gerimie Mitchell (Sr., WR); Steve Dolphus (Sr., WR); Kareem Warren (Sr., DT).

Key Red Devils: Michail Carter (Sr. DL); Chris Head (Sr., DL), Shaderious Crowder (Jr., QB).

Scouting report: Westside’s first trip to Red Devil Hill will be another test for the Seminoles’ offensive line, which has been strong through the first half of the season. They face Carter, a four-star recruit, and a Jackson team that is a double-overtime loss at Mary Persons shy of a 4-0 start. Westside’s leading rusher, Donta Pate, saw limited action in the Seminoles’ 42-0 win last week over Kendrick, one week after suffering a leg injury in an overtime win over Central. But the emergence of sophomore Lakelvin Clark gives Westside three solid runners to go along with a prolific passing game.

LAKESIDE AT JONES COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Lakeside leads 3-2.

Last meeting: Lakeside won 35-16 in 2014.

Key Panthers: Savon Stokes (Jr., RB/S); James Coley (Sr., DL); Nick Patterson (Sr., QB).

Key Greyhounds: Torrez Finney (Sr., DL); WR Nick Singleton (Jr., WR); Justin Chambers (Sr., DE); RB Chandler Ramage (Sr., RB); Bradley Hunnicut (Jr., QB).

Scouting report: Houston County cruised in breaking a losing streak to Lakeside a week ago, and it’s easy to see the same thing happening this week for Jones County, which lost at Lakeside a year ago. The Greyhounds are looking to stay healthy, fine-tune and take care of business with the visit by Houston County in two weeks.

UPSON-LEE AT WEST LAURENS

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: West Laurens leads 1-0.

Last meeting: West Laurens won 28-24 in 2014.

Key Knights: David Marshall (Sr., DL); Quay Reviere (Sr., RB); Kalen Pucket (Jr., QB/P); Erik Foster (Sr., DB); C.J. Barron (Jr., DL);

Key Raiders: Darius Bradford (Jr., RB); Trey Mason (Sr., DL); Jacob Clark (Sr., OL); Jarett Henry (Sr., LB); Shundrekus Smith (Jr., DL).

Scouting report: The offensive linemen will like this one, because it’s some power football with quality running backs on both sides. The homestanding Raiders get an edge because they’ve played a tougher schedule and more four-quarter games, but the Knights might be fresher. Key players are different, but this should be just as tight as a year ago.
