TOP FIVE

WEST LAURENS AT HOWARD

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Series history: West Laurens leads 6-1.

Last meeting: West Laurens won 56-19 in 2014.

Key Raiders: Darius Bradford (Jr., RB/MLB); Brandon Stuckey (Sr., WR/DB); Jalen Mack (Sr., QB).

Key Huskies: Courvoisier King (Sr., QB); Tyjae Lockett (Sr., OL/DL); JaQwun Stinson (Sr., RB/OLB).

Scouting report: GHSA Region 2-AAAA play begins, and a game that was one-sided last year is expected to be much more competitive this season. Howard is off to its best start in program history at 4-0, while West Laurens (3-1) was hit hard on offense by graduation. Howard matches up much better defensively against run-based offenses that it does against the pass, and West Laurens is running the ball a lot more this year than it did a year ago. Still, West Laurens will be a big test for Howard, arguably the deepest team the Huskies have faced so far. Both teams had last Friday off.

LAKESIDE-EVANS AT HOUSTON COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Lakeside leads 3-0.

Last meeting: Lakeside won 24-20 in 2014.

Key Panthers: Savon Stokes (Jr., RB/S); James Coley (Sr., DL); Nick Patterson (Sr., QB).

Key Bears: Payton Johnson (Sr., WR); Chris Brinson (Sr., RB); Mack McCullough (Jr., LB); Tucker Coody (Jr., OL); Jake Fromm (Jr., QB).

Scouting report: Houston County flexed some running game muscles last week against Warner Robins and might do the same this week. Lakeside has a better record after four games this year than it had last year but lost some quality skill players. And the Bears are ready to break a three-game losing streak to the Panthers.

JONES COUNTY AT GROVETOWN

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Jones County leads 3-0.

Last meeting: Jones County won 45-7 in 2014.

Key Greyhounds: Quay Betha (Soph., OL); Davian Daniel (Sr., WR); Torrez Finney (Sr., DL); D’Kel Lowe (Sr., DE).

Key Warriors: Key Skylor Vance (Sr., QB); Shiyear Woodbury (Sr., RB): Torrence Green (Jr., LB).

Scouting report: The Greyhounds are ready to put last week’s loss to Northside in the rearview mirror and are in a mindset to roll the Warriors like they did a year ago. Grovetown is 3-1 for the first time since 2011.

LINCOLN COUNTY AT FPD

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Lincoln County leads 3-0.

Last meeting: Lincoln County won 10-0 in 2014.

Key Red Devils: Jessie Parks (Sr., DL); Quay Hartfield (Jr., RB/CB); Jamal Norman (Soph., RB/CB).

Key Vikings: Will McCormick (Sr., QB); Reggie Gantt (Sr., FB); Torrian Bradley-McSwain (Jr., CB).

Scouting report: After some slow starts by its standards the past few years, Lincoln County is out of the gate strong this season. Its 4-0 start is the Red Devils’ best in four years, with three of the four wins coming by blowout margins. FPD has a young team but one that is starting to show some promise after a season-opening loss to Howard. The Vikings (2-1) shut out Monticello and rolled past GMC. This contest should be a strong challenge for FPD heading into next week’s rivalry contest at Stratford.

WESTSIDE AT KENDRICK

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

Series history: Westside leads 1-0.

Last meeting: Westside won 42-0 in 2014.

Key Seminoles: Savion Knowlton (Jr., QB); Gerimie Mitchell (Sr., WR); Steve Dolphus (Sr., WR); Kareem Warren (Sr., DT).

Key Cherokees: Tyrell Smith (Sr., RB); Antwan Burns (Sr., DB).

Scouting report: After going to overtime last week against Central, Westside takes on a Kendrick team it beat easily last year. Westside is starting to have a few bumps and bruises, but the Seminoles’ traditional depth appears to be kicking in. Junior running back Donta Pate missed most of the second half against Central after suffering a leg injury, but sophomore Lakelvin Clark stepped in and carried much of the load en route to a 24-21 victory. Westside doesn’t have another game in Macon until Oct. 30 when it hosts Peach County.
