Sunday Morning Quarterback: What we learned
Right down to the wire: The Central and Howard football programs were on similar footing heading into their matchup Friday, and their game couldn’t have been any closer. Howard (3-0) pulled out the 30-29 win in the final minute, but not before Central (1-1) came close to stealing the game-winning score. One highlight of the game was the passing performance by both quarterbacks. Neither Howard’s Courvoisier King nor Central’s Derrick Evans threw an interception, and they combined for 425 yards and five touchdowns through the air.
Westside defense making big plays: Westside’s defense made a big difference in the Seminoles’ 30-10 win at Harris County. The Westside defense forced four Harris County turnovers in the second half, with Kareem Warren returning a fumble 27 yards for a score, as the Seminoles improved to 2-0 ahead of a big non-region home game Friday against 3-0 West Laurens.
Big line for Covenant: The Covenant offensive line put up a strong performance in a 38-6 win over Nathanael Greene. The Rams racked up 425 yards of total offense, including 338 rushing yards.
Mary Persons spreading wealth: There are only so many ways to score, and the Bulldogs used a chunk in the win over Washington County, scoring once by run, once by field goal once by fumble return, and twice by the pass.
Nothing new in Region 2-AAAA: Excluding Houston County’s night game Saturday against Grovetown, the matchups of the three local schools against three Augusta schools went fairly similar to last last year, with Northside, Jones County and Warner Robins winning by a 117-20 margin, compared to 145-18 last year. Local teams pulled starters earlier this go ‘round.
Talk about stepping up: Warner Robins was ready for a 1-2 punch in the backfield with the bulldozing of Terry Harris and the mix of power and speed of Javian Bradford-Jackson. Thanks to Harris’ injury late in the second half against Peach County, the 2 has become the 1, and behind an impressive offensive line, has 378 yards and three touchdowns in two games.
Mother Nature anti-football?: A number of games around the southern part of the state were shortened because of lightning. Why, even rivals Lowndes and Valdosta couldn’t get one up on the other, with both teams winning games that were stopped early. And Wheeler County’s game at Lanier County never got started and was cancelled
