Tattnall Square prepares for test against Warren County
The Tattnall Square triple-option flows efficiently regardless of who is in the backfield.
It will be put to the test at home Friday, however, against the athleticism of a Warren County team that already has a victory under its belt.
“Warren is super athletic,” Tattnall head coach Clint Morgan said. “(Warren County head coach) Cherard Freeman was on my staff in Statesboro for years, and he is a tremendous football coach. He took that job three years ago, played a bunch of freshmen, and now they’re all juniors who are much faster, stronger and just better than they were three years ago. They’re so athletic with a lot of speed and we have to limit their big plays.”
Tattnall cruised to a 37-7 win at GMC in its opener last week and might have found its next breakout player in the process. Running back Ahmad Barron, who got limited carries last year, scored three touchdowns in the win, finishing with 76 rushing yards and 47 receiving yards, but that isn’t anything new to Morgan.
“I’ve said all along that Ahmad is a scoring machine,” Morgan said. “All he does is score. Whether it is catching the ball out of the backfield or running the ball, Ahmad just scores in a variety of ways for us. The past couple of seasons, we’ve had J.J. Battle who carried the ball more than Ahmad, but now Ahmad is transitioned into that role of probably having the most carries, and I’m pleased with how hard he has worked so far.”
The biggest key for Tattnall in its first win and for the triple-option attack in general is how well the offensive line played. Tattnall returned just one starter on the offensive line, senior Rex Damron, who feels the younger players on the line will get better with experience.
Tattnall racked up 325 yards on the ground last week.
“It doesn’t matter who we play, every game is a big game to us,” Damron said. “The offensive line is so important, and one guy messing up a block can throw the entire play off. You trust your teammates, and we certainly have that trust in each other. The younger guys have picked up on things and have gotten better over time, and we’re going to have to keep our assignments and be locked in against Warren.”
But even with a huge win like the Trojans had last week, Morgan has been around the game long enough to know that teams have to stay even-keeled for the long haul in order to build a winning season.
“It’s too early to be too confident,” Morgan said. “We were pleased with what happened last Friday, but we were over that one pretty quick. It is how you have to be in this game. You’re always happy when you come off of a victory, and I’m happy where we are, but we definitely realize and understand we have a very long way to go.”
