TOP FIVE

WARNER ROBINS AT PEACH COUNTY

Game time: 8 p.m.

Series history: Peach County leads 4-3.

Last meeting: Peach County won 19-0 in 2014.

Key Demons: Marquez Callaway (Sr., WR/DB); Trey Ethridge (Sr., LB); Chandler Jones (Sr., OL/DL); Conner Johnston (Sr., FB/LB).

Key Trojans: Kearis Jackson (Soph., WR); Tyrique McGhee (Sr., DB/QB); Bryce Mackey (Sr., OL); Kyle Nixon (Jr., LB); James Jackson (Jr., RB).

Scouting report: There will be plenty of talent on the field, but how cohesive the teams are is a question. Peach County didn’t inspire its coaches much in its scrimmage with Northside and is breaking in a new quarterback and tailback. The Demons have some experience and talent on offense, but defense will be Warner Robins’ strength for a while. Warner Robins has no doubt heard last year’s score a lot this week.

RUTLAND VS. WESTSIDE

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Series history: Westside leads 5-0.

Last meeting: Westside won 49-14 in 2014.

Key Hurricanes: Edwin Walton (Sr., WR); Jimel Dean (Sr., LB); Anthony Whitehead (Sr., LB).

Key Seminoles: Steve Dolphus (Sr., WR); Abdul Davis (Sr., DE); Gerimie Mitchell (Sr., WR).

Scouting report: Entering its 18th season of varsity play, Westside still hasn’t lost to an in-county opponent. The Seminoles, who went 9-2 last year, are heavy favorites against a Rutland team that went 3-7 a year ago and is breaking in a lot of new players this time around. The teams get an early start on GHSA Region 2-AAA play, with the next region game for both not coming until Sept. 18.

NORTHEAST VS. SOUTHWEST

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./Henderson Stadium.

Series history: Northeast leads 23-22.

Last meeting: Southwest won 20-16 in 2014.

Key Raiders: Christopher Spencer (Sr., FS/WR); Phillip Thomas (Jr., RB/SS); DJ Jones (Sr., C/NT).

Key Patriots: Justin Slocum (Sr., ATH); Sederan Scott (Jr., RB); Jaquavious Solomon (Jr., WR).

Scouting report: Southwest will be looking to tie the all-time series as the Bibb County rivals open the season. After scoring seven or fewer points against the Raiders in four straight meetings, the Patriots broke through last year to give head coach Joseph Dupree his first victory with the program.

JACKSON AT MARY PERSONS

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Mary Persons leads 53-19.

Last meeting: Mary Persons won 41-21 in 2014.

Key Red Devils: Michail Carter (Sr. DL); Chris Head (Sr., DL), Shaderious Crowder (Jr., QB).

Key Bulldogs: Jake Johnston (Sr., QB); Justin Stroud (Sr., WR); Will Bazemore (Sr., TE).

Scouting report: Mary Persons has won four of the past five meetings and is coming off a 9-3 season in which it finished second in GHSA Region 2-AAAA. But Jackson, which finished third in Region 2-AAA en route to a 7-4 season, has the services of two strong defensive linemen, including the widely recruited Carter, a four-star (Scout) tackle. The 6-foot-3, 311-pound Carter has a who’s who of SEC and ACC programs looking at him.

MORGAN COUNTY AT JONES COUNTY

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Morgan County leads 12-3.

Last meeting: Jones County won 45-17 in 2014.

Key Bulldogs: Trey Chapman (Sr., DB); Malik Chapman (Jr., S) M.J. Webb (Jr., DE) Quin Williams (Soph., LB).

Key Greyhounds: Torrez Finney (Sr., DL); WR Nick Singleton (Jr., WR); Logan Gordon (Sr., LB); RB Chandler Ramage (Sr., RB); Bradley Hunnicutt (Jr., QB).

Scouting report: The Bulldogs have a number of quality prospects, especially on defense. Webb was offered by Georgia as a freshman. Considering Jones County has a new offensive line, that could make things mighty interesting. The Bulldogs got the offense going a bit after last year’s loss, scoring 30 or more points five times en route to a 4-6 record. Jones County enters the season as a sizable target for the first time in, well, perhaps ever, and that might be something the Greyhounds have to deal with. No sneaking up on anybody.
