Thursday’s Middle Georgia high school football capsules
Veterans at Houston County
Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
Series history: Houston County leads 1-0.
Last meeting: Houston County won 46-27 in 2014.
Key Warhawks: Logan Byrd (Sr., QB); Logan Hurless (Sr., OL/DL); Isaiah Gray (Sr., DB/WR); Matthew Hearst (Sr., DB); Devin Wingate (Sr., OL/DL).
Key Bears: Bennie Steadman (Sr., LB); DE Rontravious Byron (Sr., DE); Jake Fromm (Jr., QB); Tucker Coody (Jr., OL); Myron Jacobs (Sr., LB).
Scouting report: Both teams enter healthy, except for Houston County’s Darion Anderson (knee) and Veterans’ Dawson Stephens (ACL rehab). Stephens is out, and Anderson will play defense and will be limited if any offense. But the Warhawks still have plenty of Houston County weapons to deal with other than Anderson. Houston County’s “by committee” running game will be something to keep an eye on. This is a contrast of tempo, and Veterans has to keep it slow to keep it close.
FPD VS. HOWARD
Game time/site: 7 p.m./Five Star Stadium.
Series history: FPD leads 1-0.
Last meeting: FPD won 26-25 in overtime last year.
Key Vikings: Will McCormick (Sr., QB); Reggie Gantt (Sr., FB); Torrian Bradley (Jr., CB).
Key Huskies: Courvoisier King (Sr., QB); Tyjae Lockett (Sr., OL/DL); JaQwun Stinson (Sr., RB/OLB).
Scouting report: After making some adjustments, Howard put together three strong quarters last week against Lamar County en route to a 28-19 victory. The Huskies demonstrated some play-making ability, with King teaming up with Alphonso Stephens for two touchdown catches -- one going for 85 yards -- and Jerin Means breaking tackles on a 63-yard scoring run. Howard’s relative depth against smaller schools paid off against Lamar County, and it likely will be a strong advantage again Thursday against an FPD squad that returns just three starters on offense.
WILKINSON COUNTY AT CENTRAL
Game time/site: 7 p.m./Henderson Stadium.
Series history: Central leads 1-0.
Last meeting: Central won 41-14 last year.
Key Warriors: Akeem Jackson (Jr., RB); Tylan Grable (Soph., QB); Jai Boyd (Sr., RB).
Key Chargers: Derrick Evans (Sr., QB); Antonio Sanders (Jr., RB); Ivory Childers (Sr., WR).
Scouting report: After making the playoffs for the first time in six years last year, hopes are high for the 2015 season at Central. Jesse Hicks enters his fourth season at Central with many of the team’s skill players returning. Central won its scrimmage two weeks ago against FPD, and the Chargers face another GHSA Region 7-A opponent in Wilkinson County, a team that went 4-6 last year.
