Middle Georgia HS football power rankings: Where is your team ranked after Week 2?
High school football is underway in Middle Georgia. Week 2 saw statement wins around the area. This has caused some movements in the power rankings this week with a pair of new teams entering the top 10 but the top 3 remains unchanged as all three cruised to wins.
Each week The Telegraph will release power rankings for the top teams in the area. This won’t be a ranking of who would beat who on a neutral field but rather based on that team’s success in their respective classifications.
1. Warner Robins
The Demons are once again the top team in Middle Georgia and it could be a while before someone is able to knock them out of that spot .
Against Archer, Warner Robins dealt with multiple lightning delays and a close game heading into the half. Much like the game against Valdosta, the Demons managed to turn it on down the stretch to close out with a win. Warner Robins will have a bye week before a showdown with Northside.
Last week: 50-34 win over Archer
Previous rank: 1
2. Northeast
The Raiders got the best win of the young season in Week 1 over Jones County. This felt like the potential for a trap game against a city rival in Central. All Northeast did was dominate from the word “go” and solidified itself as one of the best teams in Middle Georgia and the best team in Macon.
They have a much-deserved week off before a matchup with Dougherty, another game in which the Raiders should be favored.
Last week: 43-0 win over Central
Previous rank: 2
3. Northside
Northside has a claim to the best resume so far this season with dominant wins over Peach County and Veterans. Peach County never felt particularly close, despite it being just a 14-point spread by the end of the game.
This marks back-to-back wins for Northside over Peach County in Chad Alligood’s first two seasons as the head coach.
The Eagles will take on Howard this week and could do enough to set up a 1 vs. 2 matchup with Warner Robins in two weeks with a win over the Huskies.
Last week: 28-14 win over Peach County
Previous rank: 3
4. Jones County
Jones County has moved up and down these power rankings more than any other team so far . The loss to Northeast is likely just a small speed bump in what will be another successful season for the Greyhounds and head coach Mike Chastain.
Jones County got a rebound win over a really good North Gwinnett team. Evan West drilled a 50-yard field goal to seal the win.
Jones County will meet Veterans next week and would likely solidify itself as a top 5 team with a win. A loss and there will once again be a reason to continue a rollercoaster through the rankings for the Greyhounds.
Last week: 34-28 win over North Gwinnett
Previous rank: 6
5. Mary Persons
Duke Watson has been one of the stars through the first two weeks of the season. He has scored eight touchdowns in blowout wins over Towers County and McDonough.
A bye week for Mary Persons hopefully won’t slow down this team’s momentum. Out of the gate, this looks like a one of the better teams in Middle Georgia, It will be interesting to see if anyone can stop Watson and, if thye do, how Mary Persons responds.
Last week: 42-28 win over McDonough
Previous rank: 9
6. Peach County
The Trojans have lost a pair of games to open the seasons that never felt close but also didn’t feel like a true blowout either. Peach County schedules some of the best teams not just in the state but in the southeast to prepare for its region schedule.
This has resulted in a couple of losses that might prove to be the best thing that could happen to this team down the stretch as it looks to win a region title. Peach County will likely once again be a force in 3A once it gets through this brutal stretch of out-of-region games.
Last week: 28-14 loss to Northside
Previous rank: 4
7. Baldwin
Baldwin got a bye this week due to a COVID-19 cancellation. No movement for the Braves this week, but a win at Ware County next week could help their cause. The win in Week 1 over Liberty County is enough to keep them from sliding down.
Last week: Bye
Previous rank: 7
8. Perry
The Panthers win over Houston County looks more impressive this week after the Bears knocked off Crisp County.
Perry was also impacted by a pair of COVID-19 cancellations. The Panthers were able to schedule a game on Thursday against Crisp County, which could be a launching point for this team to jump in the rankings.
Last week: Bye
Previous rank: 8
9. Stratford
Stratford dominated in all facets of the game in its season opener this week. It will be an interesting race for who is the best private school team in Middle Georgia as all four have notched wins in their openers.
FPD and Mount de Sales were on byes this week, which allowed Stratford to once again enter the Top 10. Tattnall got an impressive win over Hawkinsville and was also in consideration.
If Stratford continues to roll through the competition like it did this week then it could be the team to beat.
Last week: 47-7 win over George Walton
Previous rank: Unranked
10. Howard
The Huskies will take on Northside this week in a battle of undefeated teams. Howard has wins over Central and Southwest to start the season.
If this team is able to keep it close or pull the upset then it could be a good indication this team could make some noise this year. But a blowout loss could expose the 2-0 record for beating up on struggling teams.
Last week: 35-0 win over Southwest
Previous rank: Unranked
Teams that dropped out of the top 10: Dublin (5), FPD (10)
