Middle Georgia football scores: Major upset in Macon rivalry game and other highlights

Here is a look at the high school football action on Friday night from around Middle Georgia.

1. Cam Stewart, Houston County defensive back: A big pick-6 by Stewart led to a 17-10 win over a good Coffee County team on the road. The Bears improved to 2-1 on the season. The defense has been a big part of the successful start to the season, giving up less than 30 total points across three games.

2. Blake Etheridge, Veterans quarterback: The Veterans defense gets a large part of the credit for the Warhawks’ 3-0 start to the season. But Blake Etheridge has given the offense an additional layer after leaning heavily on the run game over the past couple of seasons. Etheridge’s ability to stretch out a defense has given star running back Lebron Fields a lot more room to run as teams can no longer stack the box to stop him.

3. Demario Wilmore, Tattnall defensive back: The Trojans cruised to a 48-0 win over ACE, but the offense didn’t score all 48 alone. Wilmore had a pair of pick-6s to lead the defense. Tattnall is 2-0 on the season.

BEST GAME

Central 12, Westside 7

This game wasn’t about big plays or stats. It was all about the bragging rights. This is a rivalry game that hasn’t been much of a rivalry since Westside started its football program. Central was 0-18 against Westside heading into Friday night. Led by head coach Joaquin Sample and quarterback Jalik Thomas, the Chargers pulled off the upset to open the season. It wasn’t a pretty win as neither team could get the offense going. But it is a huge step for Central to pick up the win over a Westside team that is year in and year out the best team in Macon. The Chargers at least for one season will have the bragging rights over their crosstown rival.

SCOREBOARD:

  • Northside 28, Howard 7
  • Bleckley County 44, South Atlanta 6
  • FPD 22, Brookstone 7
  • Luella 21, Rutland 6
  • Harris County 14, Upson-Lee 13
  • Tattnall 48, ACE 0
  • Mary Persons 50, Greene County 0
  • Houston County 17, Coffee County 10
  • Peach County 54, Griffin 14
  • Veterans 30 vs Jones County 6
  • Northeast 34 vs Therrell 20

WHAT’S NEXT

Northside vs. Warner Robins

This is the biggest rivalry game in Middle Georgia. The two teams do not like each other and it makes for one of the best environments in all of high school football. Northside is coming off back-to-back wins over Peach County and Howard. Warner Robins is coming off of a bye week after starting 1-1 on the season with a last-minute loss to Valdosta and a blowout win over Archer.

Howard vs. Central

Central is coming off of an emotional win against Westside and will need to avoid a major letdown in its second straight game against a crosstown opponent. Howard had its moments against Northside, including a long touchdown catch and run by Duran Wilder, but the Eagles proved to be too much. With a week of games under their belts, it will be interesting to see which team responds in Week 2 of action in Bibb County.
