Middle Georgia football scores: Close games highlight the first week of action

Here is a look at the high school football action on Friday night from around Middle Georgia.

Valdosta 28, Warner Robins 25

Missed extra points have been the story of the last few seasons for Warner Robins and against Valdosta those issues popped up. Warner Robins got on the board early with a 18-yard touchdown run by Jahlen Rutherford.

The Demons added another touchdown before the end of the half on a kickoff return to take a 13-3 lead after a missed extra point. The Wildcats broke through for their first touchdown midway through the third quarter.

Warner Robins quarterback Jalen Addie tossed a 60-yard touchdown to answer back. The Demons went for the two-point conversion and didn’t convert. The Wildcats scored another touchdown to cut the lead down to two going into the fourth quarter.

An 88-yard run by Malcolm Brown set up Ahmed Walker’s touchdown to put Warner Robins up 25-17 after another missed extra point. Valdosta put together back-to-back scoring drives including the game-winning 41-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the game.

Valdosta head coach Rush Propst earned a win in his first game as the coach of the Wildcats.

Warner Robins drops to 0-1 to start the season. It’s the first time Warner Robins has lost its season opener since 2016. The Demons return home next week to take on Archer.

Grayson 51, Jones County 13

The Grayson Rams came into this matchup touted as one of the best teams in the state. The Rams lived up to the hype against Jones County as the Greyhounds never found their footing in this one.

Jones County started the night on offense by defensive back Jibrahn Claude grabbed one of his two interceptions on the night to set up Grayson’s first score of the game. A stalled drive by Jones County set up a Jamal Haynes touchdown grab to put Grayson up 14-0 early in the first quarter.

The Greyhounds showed signs of life with an interception that set up a 40-yard pass by John Alan Richter. Jones County got on the board on a short touchdown run by freshman fullback Omarion Tucker to cut the lead to seven. Aside from a couple of big defensive turnovers and a long touchdown run on a trick play, this game was all Grayson.

The Rams piled on the points right before the half after a pick-6 put them up 37-13 heading into halftime. Grayson dominated the second half and closed out Jones County with a pair of touchdowns.

Jones will be back in action at home against North Gwinnett as the Greyhounds will look to get their first win of the season.

Mount de Sales 28, Monticello 14

The Mount de Sales Cavaliers didn’t waste any time getting the season going as they opened the game with a 75-yard kickoff return. The defense would come up with a big play near the end of the first quarter as Kobe Butts returned an interception to put Mount de Sales up 14-0. Monticello would get going as it tied the game at 14 midway through the third quarter.

Former Mount de Sales quarterback Dexter Williams graduated and is now at the University of Indiana, but his replacement A’Khori Jones picked up where he left off with a pair of touchdowns to close out the game for Mount de Sales. Jones had a passing touchdown to Drew Senn and added a 31-yard rushing touchdown in the final two minutes of the game.

Mount de Sales will take Wesleyan next week on the road.
