Christian’s late-game heroics power Rutland into the region title game

High school basketball region tournaments are underway. Games started Monday and will continue through Saturday. Here is a look at the scores and highlights from Friday, the schedule for Saturday’s games and a look ahead to a pair of key matchups in the region title games.

Rutland 62, Kendrick 58

Junior center Kayla Shines lead the Rutland Hurricanes with 21 points but it was Monique Christian’s last-minute layup through contact put them up for good. Next up for Rutland is Jackson in the region title game. The two teams split the season series with Rutland getting the most recent win by 20 at home. The game will be played at Rutland and could play a factor.

Central 90, Peach County 49

In the Central Charger’s two region tournament games they have outscored their opponents 191-86. Coach Andre Taylor said after the game the team is starting to peak at the right time. They will take on either Westside in a rematch of last year’s region title game that saw Central grab the win in a triple-overtime thriller.
