Powerful team coming to take on WR
Mike Chastain knows it won’t be easy.
The Rome Wolves will come into McConnell-Talbert Stadium on Friday night as one of the most dominating teams to come along in Georgia in many years.
Coming into the GHSA 5A state championship game, the Wolves are undefeated and are 18 points away from breaking the GHSA scoring record in a single football season.
The Wolves are averaging 51 points a game and are giving up only 10.
They have playmakers on both sides of the football with Georgia commit Adam Anderson leading the defense with 23 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks, while Knox Kadum leads a high scoring offense from the quarterback position.
The closest game they have played all season was the first one of the season when they beat Harrison 33-21.
On top of that, they are the defending GHSA 5A state champion.
So what does Warner Robins have to do to win?
“I think we just have to play our game and stick to the game plan,” said Chastain, whose Warner Robins team is also undefeated this year. “We don’t walk around and talk about how good Rome is, but the kids watch film and they know. Obviously we have to play well. They score a ton of points and their defensive line is dominating. But we feel like we have a pretty good football team, too.”
Warner Robins has had its fair share of close games this year. Out of the 14 wins they have, four of them are by three points or less. “I definitely think the fact that we have been tested the entire year is a bonus for us,” Chastain said. “We have had games where we have been behind and had to come back to win and our team knows that we have that swagger that comes with playing in big games.”
Warner Robins was 3-8 last year, but Chastain is not overly surprised with his team’s success a year later. “Towards the end of last year we were starting to play very good football, and coming into this year we felt like we had to grow in a few areas and we would be fine,” Chastain said. “I think our hard work over the last two years is showing and that is why we are playing for a state championship.”
Warner Robins is hoping to send off a huge 35 man senior class off in a right way. “These seniors have done a great job of leading this team through all of our ups and downs and I can’t think of a better way of sending them off with a state championship,” Chastain said. “We know it will be a great challenge but we are ready for Friday night.”
