Baldwin runner signs with Wake Forest
The list of Baldwin track and field athletes headed to big-name colleges continues to grow.
Evan Simmons signed with Wake Forest last week, joining Indiana-bound Zykeria Williams as Baldwin athletes headed to NCAA Division I programs from the Class of 2017.
Simmons, a four-year letter winner in cross country and track, was a captain on teams that won region titles and was a member of the Braves’ GHSA Class 4A championship 4x400 relay team. He fought through injuries for most of his senior year.
“Simmons chose Wake Forest because of the family atmosphere and because of the school’s unwavering dedication to its high academic standards,” Baldwin head coach Dexter Ricks said in a release. “Simmons graduated as a honor graduate with a 3.5 GPA and also with 44 college credit hours.”
Another Baldwin track athlete, Jatavious Harris, has committed to the Tennessee football program and is looking to graduate from high school a semester early.
FPD lacrosse
Ryan Kelly, a former assistant at Asbury University in Kentucky, has been named the boys lacrosse head coach at FPD, replacing Kristy Alvarez.
Kelly played collegiately at Kentucky. He also has coached on the high school level, in Lexington, serving as head coach at Lafayette.
FPD played its first varsity season this year going 5-10.
“We are excited to see Ryan take the lead of our growing lacrosse program,” FPD athletics director Greg Moore said in a release. “Ryan brings a wealth of knowledge for the sport and a passion for coaching.”
