Fans won’t be allowed at Masters when tournament is played in November

When the 2020 Masters is finally played, there won’t be spectators at Augusta National Golf Club.

The club Wednesday announced the event “will take place November 9-15 without patrons or guests on the grounds,” according to a statement.

“Since our initial announcement to postpone the 2020 Masters, we have remained committed to a rescheduled Tournament in November while continually examining how best to host a global sporting event amid this pandemic,” club chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement. “As we have considered the issues facing us, the health and safety of everyone associated with the Masters always has been our first and most important priority.

“Throughout this process, we have consulted with health officials and a variety of subject matter experts. Ultimately, we determined that the potential risks of welcoming patrons and guests to our grounds in November are simply too significant to overcome.”

The event was rescheduled from its usual early April weekend because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was originally scheduled for April 9-12.

All 2020 ticket holders will be guaranteed the same tickets in 2021, when it’s expected the Masters will resume its normal April spot on golf’s calendar.

The news means all three majors in this year of COVID-19 will not have fans, and the silence figures to be most deafening at the Masters where the roars of the crowd are about as famous as the raw beauty of Augusta National.

The British Open announced in April it would be canceled this year.
