If Saturday’s open practice at Sanford Stadium was any indication, freshman Mecole Hardman will have a solid role in his first year with Georgia.

Hardman may not open the season as a starter on defense, but he very well could work into a rotation and play in certain packages. But where Hardman may get his first look early in the season is on special teams.

Hardman burst through the line of scrimmage for two blocked field goals in Saturday’s open practice. It wouldn’t have mattered who the place-kicker was because he was in the backfield quick and in front of both William Ham and Jacob Eason, who was holding the attempt.

Hardman may work into some offensive plays, as well, considering how electric he is with the ball in his hands. A five-star recruit listed as an athlete on Georgia’s roster, Hardman was impressive in front of the fans and reporters in attendance of Saturday’s practice. He showed an ability to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage and showed off his speed at the position.

Before Georgia began practice, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was asked about Hardman’s development since enrolling over the summer.

"Mecole, he's doing fine," Tucker said. "High expectations for all these new guys that come in, highly recruited players – but when we get them here, we're just working and working hard. Trying to get these guys dialed in to the techniques and fundamentals of what we want them to do and how we want them to do it, and he's responding well. He's a hard worker. He's got a great attitude. He works well with his teammates. He fits well in the room. And he always wants to know, ‘Coach, was that good? Is that how you want me to do it?’ And he's always paying attention in meetings and things like that. I think his future is very bright."
