Atkins not present for Thursday’s practice
Georgia defensive tackle John Atkins was not present for Thursday’s practice.
Atkins was present for Wednesday’s session, making it possible that he’s dealing with an injury that sidelined him. Georgia is already thin at linebacker, with Atkins being the lone junior on scholarship. During a pursuit drill shown Wednesday, Atkins was one of the top two defensive linemen.
Atkins started three games as a defensive tackle in 2015 before being unseated by Trent Thompson. Atkins is listed as a nose tackle on the roster, although head coach Kirby Smart has previously said that the Thomson native can play multiple defensive line spots.
Georgia’s depth at defensive line is concerning for the season opener against North Carolina. Jonathan Ledbetter, who hasn’t practiced with the team yet, is suspended and Julian Rochester’s status is unknown as his felony weapon and criminal damage case is sorted out.
