Kirby Smart hopes for QBs to coordinate workouts in group effort
While Georgia has three quarterbacks competing against each other for one starting spot, head coach Kirby Smart wants each player to coordinate voluntary workouts this summer in a group effort.
Following spring practice and the G-Day game, neither Greyson Lambert, Brice Ramsey or Jacob Eason appeared to separate from the pack — at least from what Smart said publicly. Therefore, all three quarterbacks figure to be in the mix when preseason practice picks up in early August.
In the meantime, each of the three quarterbacks will be expected to play his part when it comes to organizing team activities, especially when it comes to throwing with Georgia’s receivers.
“I think it’s hard to evaluate them in the summer towards fall because we’re not obviously out there with those guys,” Smart said. “So that’s the tough part. I challenged each one of them to be a leader, to organize and to structure things. It’s not about who’s doing it, it’s not about who gets the credit for doing it. It’s not about who calls the wide receivers. It’s really not about that. It’s about getting all of us better. Those other guys need just as much work as those three do.”
Each quarterback impressed during Georgia’s spring game. Eason showed off the five-star arm en route to 244 passing yards and a touchdown. Ramsey threw a couple of deep balls for completions. Lambert was precise most of the time but did deal with a couple of dropped passes and an interception.
Smart is hoping to see some progression from the quarterback room over the next few months.
“They’ve got to challenge their teammates to be there every day and come whenever they want to throw,” Smart said. “They need to coordinate that with all of them together. It’s not an independent contractor where Greyson is doing this and Brice is doing this and Jacob is doing this. We’re doing it all together. That’s important that we organize it and structure it that way. We challenged each one of them to get better and each one of them has an area they can improve in different spots. I’m happy and excited to see if they are hungry to do that. All three are looking forward being back toward the end of May and starting up with the rest of the team.”
