Fox fills vacant assistant coaching spot with familiar face

Mark Fox and David Carter are coaching together again.

Fox announced Carter, who was previously an assistant at Saint Mary's, will fill the vacant assistant position job on Georgia's basketball staff. Carter replaces former Georgia assistant Yasir Rosemond, who left for a similar position at Alabama.

Carter was an assistant at Nevada during Fox's five years as the Wolf Pack's head coach. Carter then became Nevada's head coach when Fox left for Georgia in 2009.

"I am every excited to have David joining our coaching staff," Fox said. "He assisted me at the University of Nevada and I aggressively pursued him when this opportunity opened. He is a proven winner, a great teacher, a proven evaluator and recruiter and the type of man I want in our program. We have always had a great chemistry and my staff and I welcome his expertise."

Before joining the Gaels as an assistant, Fox was Nevada's head coach for six seasons. He compiled two 20-win seasons but was fired after the 2014-15 campaign that finished in a 9-22 season.

At Nevada, Fox credited Carter with the signings of future NBA players Ramon Sessions, JaVale McGee and Kirk Snyder. All three players came from different parts of the country -- Sessions from South Carolina, McGee from Chicago and Snyder from Los Angeles.

Last week at SEC league meetings, Fox said he was looking for an assistant who could recruit all over the country.

"He will make an immediate impact on our team and is exactly what I feel our perimeter players need at this time," Fox said. "Obviously he'll also broaden our recruiting base with his contacts."

At Nevada, Carter's best season was in 2012 when his team finished 28-7. That same year, Carter was named the WAC Coach of the Year.

Carter was an exceptional player at Saint Mary's, where he was a four-year starter. In 1989, Carter helped lead the Gaels to the NCAA Tournament and an end-of-season No. 17 ranking. In 2006, Carter was inducted into the Saint Mary's Athletic Hall of Fame.
