Having narrowed down search, Fox hopes to make assistant hire soon
With an opening on his staff, Mark Fox hopes to fill the vacant assistant coaching spot in the next seven to 10 days.
Fox said he has narrowed his list of potential assistants down, although he didn’t reveal any names or how many coaches are being considered. The selected coach will replace Yasir Rosemond, who left Georgia for a similar position at Alabama.
“We’re going to try and improve our staff. We’re always trying to get better,” Fox said. “I think that’s our goal. My timetable would be, hopefully, in the next week or 10 days to get something finalized.”
Rosemond was with Georgia for the past three years after spending two seasons at Samford. Regarded as a strong recruiter, Rosemond helped land forward Derek Ogbeide and guard Teshaun Hightower during his time with the Bulldogs.
Rosemond is replacing Bob Simon, who was fired from head coach Avery Johnson’s staff at Alabama.
With Philip Pearson and Jonas Hayes still on staff, Fox will be looking for an assistant who can help coach up the guards on the roster.
Fox spoke about the ideal characteristics he is looking for in his next assistant hire.
“I think what’s always important is to have someone who can wear multiple hats,” Fox said. “I want someone who can obviously go on the road and recruit. We’ve got some guys who are strong in the South. Should we get someone who can maybe branch out a little bit? We need someone who will be a good perimeter coach and someone who can help our players get better.
“Player development cannot be ignored. I think that’s critical. And someone with experience enough to help us on the bench. That would be something that would be a bonus also.”
