Georgia's Marshall Morgan visits Devon Gales at the hospital
Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan took it upon himself to visit Southern receiver Devon Gales, who sustained a spinal cord injury in last Saturday’s game.
Morgan and Gales’ heads collided on a kickoff late in the third quarter. Gales fell to the turf shortly after the play and did not move for about 10 minutes. He was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field.
Southern has since announced that Gales had neck surgery to repair multiple fractures in his neck. Gales has been able to move his upper body.
On Tuesday, head coach Mark Richt said Morgan visited the Gales family at Athens Regional Medical Center, where he had surgery and is recovering.
“I think that was really healthy for him, for everybody,” Richt said. “If he didn’t go I don’t think they wouldn’t have thought one thing or another. But I think it was good for him to go and talk to everybody, and understand it’s football. No one’s mad at Marshall and he didn’t do anything that was out of line in any way, shape or form. It’s just unfortunate.”
