Freshman year flea flicker. Rose Bowl win. Our top moments of Jake Fromm’s UGA career

One of the best quarterbacks in Georgia history has played his last down in red and black.

Jake Fromm announced his intentions Wednesday to leave school early and enter the NFL Draft. He leaves behind a legacy as one of the best quarterbacks in school history with plenty of memorable moments.

Here’s a look back at some of the best plays and games of Fromm’s Georgia career:

2017 game vs. Notre Dame

Fromm’s first collegiate start came on one of college football’s biggest stages: a night game against the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium. The freshman had his moments of inexperience, throwing an interception and losing a fumble after trying to pick the loose ball up instead of just falling on it.

But Fromm also showed flashes of what was to come over the next couple seasons. He connected with Terry Godwin on a showstopping touchdown in the first half to tie the game at 10. In the fourth quarter and with his team trailing 19-17, Fromm led a drive highlighted by a 31-yard completion to Javon Wims that set Georgia up for the winning field goal.

The win kickstarted the 2017 season and showed that the rookie signal caller could handle the bright lights.

Flea Flicker against Mississippi State

The signature play of Fromm’s first season, and maybe his career, came on the first offensive play of his third start.

The No. 11 Bulldogs started their first drive at their own 41-yard line against No. 17 Mississippi State. Fromm handed the ball to Nick Chubb, who then turned and pitched it back to the quarterback who then found Godwin streaking wide open down the field for a 59-yard flea flicker touchdown.

It wasn’t the best or prettiest throw Fromm made in his Georgia career. However, it set the tone for the 31-3 victory that night, as well as the five-game SEC stretch where the Bulldogs trounced their opponents by an average of 32 points per game.

2017 Rose Bowl

The biggest win of Fromm’s career started off miserably for Georgia. In the College Football Playoff semifinal game against Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl, the Bulldogs entered halftime trailing 31-17.

But Fromm, along with Chubb and Sony Michel, led a second-half comeback. The running backs each had third-quarter touchdowns to tie the game, and Fromm gave the team the lead with a four-yard scoring strike to Wims with 13:57 left to play.

After the Sooners retook the lead, Fromm started a last-gasp drive at the Georgia 41 with just over three minutes left. The freshman coolly led a drive where he hit on three of his four passes for 48 yards, and Chubb sent the game to overtime with a touchdown run in the final minute.

But on a night where he finished 20-of-29 for 210 yards and two touchdowns, the most important play Fromm made might not have been a pass at all. On the winning 27-yard touchdown run from Michel, Fromm lined up as a receiver and threw a block that sprung the run to the end zone, resulting in a berth in the national championship game.

2018 vs. Florida

Georgia entered this game reeling after a blowout loss to LSU and with questions swirling about if Justin Fields needed to see more time at quarterback. But in the face of criticism and in a game that played a major role in deciding the SEC East, Fromm delivered.

He completed 17-of-24 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Two of these came in the second half, one to give Georgia the lead and the other going for 24 yards to Godwin to put the Bulldogs up 29-17 with 8:39 left in the game.

Fromm made it a habit to dominate against the Gators. In three starts in Jacksonville, he completed 41 of his 61 passes for 620 yards and six touchdowns to just one interception.

2018 SEC Championship vs. Alabama

It came in a losing effort, but Fromm played one of the best games of his career in the 2018 SEC Championship against Alabama.

Gunning for a spot in the College Football Playoff for the second straight year, Fromm passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns, hitting on 25-of-39 passes in the process. His third touchdown might have been the best throw of his career, as he dropped a ball perfectly over the tight coverage and into the hands of Riley Ridley to put the Bulldogs up 28-14 in the third quarter.

The Crimson Tide came back to win on the efforts of Jalen Hurts, but Fromm once again proved his ability to put up big numbers against one of the best teams in the nation.

2019 vs. Florida

Similar to the Florida game from the previous year, this contest was surrounded by both high stakes and plenty of questions. The Georgia offense had been inconsistent (to put it kindly) to that point in 2019, and Fromm was a main target of the criticism.

But as is tradition, Fromm came up with a big performance against the Gators. His first-half scoring pass to Dominick Blaylock gave Georgia a 10-0 lead, and his 52-yard strike to Lawrence Cager extended the Bulldogs’ lead back to 14 in the fourth quarter after Florida had cut into the lead.

The Gators had cut the lead back to seven and stood to get the ball back for one last drive if Georgia couldn’t convert a third-and-7 with just under three minutes remaining. Florida got pressure on Fromm, but the junior stood in the pocket and lofted a pass for Eli Wolf, who hauled it in for the game-sealing first down.

Fromm ended his final game in Jacksonville 20-for-30 for 279 yards and two touchdowns. He walked off the field a perfect 3-0 against Florida, joining Buck Belue and John Rauch as the only Georgia quarterbacks to finish undefeated against Florida after starting at least three years.

2019 vs. Auburn

Fromm’s trip to the Plains as a freshman resulted in a blowout 40-17 loss. Two years later, he returned with a chance to clinch Georgia’s third straight SEC East title.

In a season defined by a lack of explosive plays in the passing game, Fromm bucked that trend early. He found Blaylock for a 51-yard touchdown on the Bulldogs’ second possession to take them to a 7-0 lead.

Two more five-yard touchdown passes, one to Brian Herrien and the other to Wolf, extended the lead to 21-0. The offense went cold after that and Georgia had to hold off a furious Auburn rally, but the work Fromm did early in the game gave the Bulldogs a lead they did not relinquish.
