LSU takes home the SEC Championship crown. What’s next for Georgia and the Tigers?
The 28th SEC Championship Game is officially in the books and it’s another year of heartbreak for Georgia.
The LSU Tigers defeated Georgia 37-10 to claim their first title since 2011.
The Bulldogs came up short in their bid for their second conference crown in three years and in the process, missed out on a spot in the College Football Playoff.
So, where does Georgia go from here? The answer is a familiar one, as the loss will likely send Georgia back to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
That game takes the highest-ranked SEC team that’s not in the College Football Playoff. Georgia currently fits that bill, although there’s a small possibility Florida could finish ahead of Georgia in the final playoff rankings. If that happens, the Bulldogs are ticketed for Miami and a berth in the Orange Bowl against an ACC team, likely the Virginia Cavaliers.
If it is indeed the Sugar Bowl, there could be a rematch with 2018 Rose Bowl opponent Oklahoma. If the Sooners make the playoff, then it could instead be a matchup with the Baylor Bears.
As for LSU, Saturday’s win keeps its perfect season alive and locks the Tigers into the College Football Playoff. The official final rankings won’t be announced until Sunday but if the current rankings hold true, LSU would face Clemson in a semifinal game on Dec. 28 in either Atlanta or Glendale, Arizona.
