Georgia running back D’Andre Swift suffers injury in Georgia Tech game

At the clap of a hand, running back D’Andre Swift motioned to take a direct snap in the wildcat formation. This marked Georgia’s first use of the formation this season as it tried to score near the goal line.

Swift took the snap, shifted upfield and was met by Georgia Tech linebacker David Curry for no gain. He fumbled on the play for his second of the game — Yellow Jackets’ linebacker Quez Jackson recovered Georgia’s third turnover.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Swift suffered a shoulder contusion, something the junior running back has dealt with on numerous occasions this season. Swift could’ve returned to the game if needed, Smart said, but the Bulldogs’ priority was rest given a sizeable margin of victory.

“He will be fine,” Smart said.

Swift went to the ground, clutched his hand and stayed in a lying position for a few moments while being tended to by medical staff and met Smart.

Earlier in the drive, senior running back Brian Herrien took snaps over Swift as Georgia held 17-point lead in the third quarter.

Swift has recorded 73 yards on 10 carries against the Yellow Jackets, and did not return on the following drive after the injury. Georgia now leads 31-7 over Georgia Tech after a 41-yard touchdown pass to freshman receiver George Pickens.

Following the drive, quarterback Jake Fromm checked on Swift, according to the ABC broadcast, as he sat on the sideline with a towel draped over his head.

Swift has recorded 1,203 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this season. Georgia anticipates the return of its leading rusher against No. 2 LSU in the SEC Championship game on Dec. 7.
