Mercer women's lacrosse tops Kennesaw State
The Mercer women's lacrosse team downed Kennesaw State 13-5 on Sunday afternoon at Five Star Stadium. Erica Coyne led Mercer with a season-high five goals.
Kennesaw State scored the first goal of the game, but Haleigh Brooks scored for Mercer 11 seconds later after grabbing the draw control and sprinting down the field to tie things at 1. The Bears scored five unanswered goals to close out the half, including a man-down goal by Gabby Goldberg with 1:11 on the clock, lifting Mercer to a 6-1 lead.
The Owls scored the first goal of the second half. Mercer scored the next four goals to stretch its lead to 10-2 with 18:06 to play. Kennesaw State grabbed a goal, interrupting Mercer's momentum, but the Bears found the back of the net twice more, increasing their lead to 12-3. The Owls netted back-to-back scores off a Mercer own goal and a man-up opportunity, again cutting the Bears lead, this time 12-5 with 4:32 on the clock. Coyne scored the final goal with 1:04 left to play.
The Bears (5-7, 2-1 A-Sun) are at Old Dominion on Friday.
