Mercer roundup: Tough day in softball and lacrosse
Samford belted three home runs, including a grand slam, to roll to a 10-3 win Saturday over Mercer in Southern Conference softball.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by sophomore Quirisa Mauga - her second of the series and fourth of the season - but the lead was short-lived. The Bulldogs, who outhit Mercer 14-5, sealed the win with an eight-run fifth inning.
Mauga's second home run of the series proved to be the highlight of the Bears' day The sophomore finished the game 1-for-3 with the two RBI and a walk.
Mercer fell to 16-19 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Bears begin a nine-game road trip with a doubleheader on Wednesday at Alabama State.
Mercer falls in non-conference men's lacrosse
Mercer lost 12-5 Saturday at Drexel in its final non-conference men's lacrosse game of the season.
The Bears and Dragons played a fairly even opening 15 minutes of action, Drexel leading 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
Drexel completely controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Bears 5-0 to take a six-goal lead into halftime.
