Mercer women lose to Charlotte in Georgia State event
The Mercer women's basketball team fell to Charlotte 72-62 on Saturday afternoon to open the Georgia State Thanksgiving Classic.
Freshmen KeKe Calloway and Rachel Selph both set career-highs with 11 and 14 points, respectively.
Mercer took an early 7-2 lead and led by five points several times in the first quarter. Charlotte closed out the opening quarter with a 5-2 spurt, cutting Mercer's lead to 15-13. The 49ers carried their momentum into the second quarter, working their way to a 21-18 lead in less than a minute and a half. The game remained close for the remainder of the first half, but Charlotte hit a final-second 3-pointer to take a 31-28 lead at intermission.
Charlotte held on to the lead for the entirety of the second half, despite Mercer continuing to fight. The Bears cut the 49ers lead to two, 51-49, early in the fourth quarter, but a 10-2 run gave Charlotte a 61-51 advantage with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
Mercer (3-2) takes on Howard at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Georgia State.
