Mercer soccer teams winding down regular season
Mercer's soccer teams have a big weekend ahead of them as they near the end of their regular season.
The men's program is currently 8-6-1 overall, including 3-3-1 in the Southern Conference.
On Tuesday, the men's team suffered a "tough loss" to UNC Greensboro, according to head coach Brad Ruzzo. The 3-2 setback leaves the Bears fourth in the conference, just ahead of East Tennessee State.
On Saturday, the Mercer men will face VMI for senior night. The Bears beat VMI 2-1 on Oct. 13.
"We get to honor eight great kids that have been part of the program for a while," Ruzzo said.
The Bears host ETSU on Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season Oct. 31 at Furman. The Bears lost 1-0 to Furman on a penalty kick in double-overtime.
Will Bagrou leads the Bears with four goals, while Connor Antley, Jordan Duru and Kobe Perez have three each. Goalkeeper Jeremy Booth has recorded five shutouts.
The women's team is only "a couple goals away from the championship," head coach Tony Economopoulos said.
The Bears are 4-2-1 in conference as they head into their final two games against Wofford and Furman at home this weekend.
"I'm happy with where we are," Economopoulos said.
The Bears have played their past three games on the road, coming out on top of Western Carolina (1-0) and VMI (2-0). Mercer's win over VMI on Sunday put the Bears in fifth in the conference, just ahead of Wofford.
"VMI plays a different soccer game, more bite," Economopoulos said.
Katelyn Dimopoulos leads the team with five goals, while Maddie Clark, Haleigh Svede and Jamilah Tejan have three each.
