Bobby Lamb impressed with offense’s play against Stetson
Bobby Lamb liked what he saw from his Mercer offense Saturday against Stetson in the home opener at Five Star Stadium.
A couple of days later and after watching the game tape, Lamb was even more impressed. Mercer scored 57 points and had 623 yards in rolling to its second win of the season.
That started with quarterback John Russ, who passed for 336 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown ... all in the first half and without receiver Chandler Curtis, who missed the game with a thigh bruise.
“He got rid of the ball in certain situations when they had a blitz on and basically flipped it to the tight end who was open,” Lamb said. “But if that timing was not there, that’s going to be a sack. He did some really nice things and engineered the offense and put us in great position to be successful.
“The first drive, loaded the box, we tried to get running game going and then we said, ‘If they’re going to load the box, we’re going to go to the air,’ and that’s what we did.”
The Bears (2-0) head out on the road this week as they travel to Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Alex Lakes has rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns this season, while Tee Mitchell has 281 total yards and four touchdowns.
“We’ve got a ton of weapons out there, and we didn’t even have Chandler out there, and that’s huge for us, Russ said. “The great part for our offense was that against Austin Peay, we really shot ourselves in the foot, and we got it going in the second half. (On Saturday), we got it going from the get-go, and we just kept scoring and kept rolling.”
That started up front with another strong performance from the offensive line. Russ was not sacked, and the Bears finished with 256 yards rushing.
“They played great,” Mitchell said of the offensive linemen. “They dominated the line of scrimmage. They came up and blocked really well. You couldn’t ask for better play out of them. They protected well, and they ran-blocked well.”
Of note: Lamb said Curtis remains day-to-day. ... Marvin Davis suffered a concussion and is going through concussion protocol this week. ... Lamb said Coney probably won’t make the trip to Tennessee Tech. ... Blake Jones will miss his second straight game with mononucleosis. ... Austin Wysor is having his knee evaluated this week. ... Jimmie Robinson is practicing after suffering a rib injury Saturday. ... Payton Usher will make his season debut Saturday. ... Mercer quarterbacks coach Tre Lamb played and coached at Tennessee Tech before joining the Mercer program last season.
