San Francisco calls up former Mercer standout Gearrin

Former Mercer baseball standout Cory Gearrin returned to the majors on Wednesday and saw action two days later.

The San Francisco Giants called Gearrin up from Triple-A Sacramento, where he was 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 33 relief appearances.

And he was on the mound Friday, throwing two-thirds of an inning and getting a strikeout in the Giants’ 9-1 win over San Diego.

He is now one of two former Bears in the majors, joining Oakland A’s rookie Billy Burns.
