Bears men knocked out in first round of soccer tournament

The Bears traveled to Conway, South Carolina, to take on Coastal Carolina in the first round of the NCAA soccer national championship.

Coastal Carolina forward Frantzdy Pierrot scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute. The Bears wouldn’t go down without a fight. The team took their chances nine times with four shots being on target and forcing Chanticleers’ keeper into action on all four shots. In the end, Mercer was defeated in the first round of the tournament for the second straight year, falling 1-0 to South Carolina in last year’s tournament.

Mercer keeper Jeremy Booth put in a great performance, collecting five saves and allowing the Bears to be in the match until the final whistle. Booth, a senior, finished the season with 70 saves and four shutouts.

Senior Will Bagrou lead the Bears in goals with 12 during the season and freshman Leonel Toledo Jr. lead the Bears in assists with six. The Bears season record was 7-9-6, winning a second consecutive SoCon tournament title.
